My sympathies to Kate's family. I knew her from church since I was quite young. When I went away to school, she would send me an occasional card or letter - just to say "hi, you are in our thoughts".
She will be missed.

Greg and I were blessed to have Kate as our neighbor. She was an amazing woman, kind soul, and we enjoyed our conversations and laughter. We have missed her since her move, and will now celebrate her place in heaven. Our thoughts and prayers to her family.

Where do I start? Kate was the kindest, generous, most gifted woman that I’ve ever met with such a beautiful soul. I loved her! Her May parties, her ‘Kate Sales’, her kayaking. She told me about her motorcycle class that didn’t go so well, but she tried it! I loved her sense of adventure. Tough Kate Hawkins with a heart of gold. Nothing stopped her. Except the dreaded disease. I hope she’s having a ball in heaven, riding that motorcycle through the clouds like a pro! I’ll miss you, Kate??

Kate was one of my favorite people ever, and someone I continue to aspire to be as I continue to age (though she never really aged, did she?). We loved having her and Lee as our neighbors; she took a couple of photos of our house in the snow to give us, just because that's the kind of thoughtful person she was. I loved her Christmas parties in that house, and the transition to the May parties in the new house (I always cancelled office hours to attend). I have some of her antiques from her famous garage sales which remind me of her every time I see them. She was such a force; it's hard to believe she's gone. Sympathy from Al (Robb) and me for your great loss. Enjoy the many wonderful memories I know you have.

What a phenomenal woman Kate was--one of the kindest, most generous and sincere people I've ever met, who only knew love for everyone she encountered. I'll always remember our church times, our kayak outings, her garage sales and May Day events; no matter where she was, it was always a meaningful time in everyone's life when Kate was a part of it.
She will be greatly missed but we are all the better for having known her, and we will cherish those memories forever!

Kate was a big supporter of the Boys & Girls Club she was the kindest soul and always did everything to be that bright light for so many. I remember she had brought me a Boys & Girls Club of America coffee mug it will take on a different meaning now. Kate was one of the Indian Creek Nature Center staff’s favorite friends. She could light up a room just by being in it, with her positivity and enthusiasm. And she was a fabulous ambassador, often bringing friends with her as she introduced them to ICNC or to a project or event there. Kate took on many roles over the years at ICNC, including Paddle Day participant, Maple Syrup Festival volunteer, Nature’s Noel vending with Sarah, lifetime member since 2018, trail hiker, advisor, cheerleader, and financial supporter. We miss her deeply but will remember her, along with her husband Lee, for their legacy of championing nature in our midst. Our sincere condolences go to Sarah, Lee, her grandchildren and extended family, and the many friends Kate made so effortlessly.

Foster and Sarah-
What a life force was your mother! Direct, caring, inquisitive. And kind, always kind. You, and we, are most fortunate to have been in her path, at least now and then.

Kate was a bright light whenever she entered a room! I knew her through the church and through her interest in public art. She had such a wonderful enthusiasm for life! And, her spring parties were not to be missed! Kate’s love for her family was evident to everyone. Her spiritual devotion was deep. I hope your faith, family, friends and good memories will sustain you at this time. You have my deep sympathy. Julianne Smith, Naples, Florida

I have many fond memories of Kate through the years. I first knew her as my mother's friend from church, but as I became an adult, I grew to fully appreciate this amazing woman with a keen intelligence, a love of learning, and a passion for people. Kate was such a wonderful friend to my mother and bestowed me with that same affection every time we met. Kate would give me her full attention, her twinkling eyes brimming with interest. She made me feel special; what a gift! Her May Day parties were greatly anticipated. I enjoyed the invitations with her clever poems. I cherish the loving letter Kate wrote me at the time of my mother's death. Kate was an inspiration and an encourager. I admired her deeply, and my prayers are with her family at this great loss in their lives.

My sympathy to your family. Kate was such an impressive lady. She could tackle anything. I remember different times when she was planning to put her kayak in the water after attending church service. She took the time to connect with people and I always felt the care and support she extended to me as my parents aged. She was a favorite of my parents, Grace and Don Nau. I will miss her, but I know she will receive a warm welcome in Heaven.

Wishing Kate's family deep peace in knowing that she has at last joined her beloved Lee. My late husband, Bill, considered her a great friend and went kayaking with her on many occasions. He convinced her to take Grace out for the last time in 2013 and they had a grand time. When Bill died, Kate called and suggested I use the hymn Be Now My Vision in the service and welcomed me to her church. I will remember her enthusiasm, artistry and diligence.

It has taken me a long time to write about Kate because Janet and I first met her and Lee in 1977 when we were looking for a job.
Our family was fortunate to enjoy the friendship of these two remarkable individuals and it is difficult to select from so many experiences and stories.... as we all know.
They were our friends and partners: unique, intelligent, and pioneering.
The hugs in Hy-Vee were the best near the end. Peace
