Memorial

On Sunday May 16th, 2021 David O. Hughes, loving husband and father of three children, passed away at age 85. 

Visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial 4200 1st Ave NE on Friday, May 21st, at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel State Room, from 4-7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at on Saturday, May 22nd at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids at 10 A.M. Burial will be St. Joseph Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

David is survived by his son David Hughes Jr. and Michael (Vidal) Hughes of Cedar Rapids, and Angela (Tim) Wittmer of Oregon. Grandchildren: Cameron Hughes (Edith Wheagar) of Cedar Rapids, Austin ( Rhiannon) Montelius of Iowa City ,and Andrew Montelius of Cedar Rapids and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his wife, Mary A. Hughes in 2020, parents Robert and Ann Hughes and brothers Donald and Richard Hughes.

David was born On November 15th, 1935 in Cedar Rapids where he attended McKinley School. He served in the United States Air Force as an Airman from 1954-1958. He then served from 1958-1962 in the Reserves. He was united in marriage to the love of his life Mary Ann Miller on July 25th,1959. Dave retired from Langer Manufacturing in 1998 after working there for many years. 

David was a also a devoted member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Cedar Rapids.

He enjoyed the outdoors, which included deer hunting and fishing with his friends and family vacationing for over thirty years with the family in Siren, Wisconsin on Clam Lake. He also loved taking long walks around Ellis Park with his with his wife (Snoozie).

Dave and Mary would take many cruises and travel to Las Vegas where he seemed to enjoy the waterslides more than the slots. Dave enjoyed lazy days in the sun reading by the pool and also celebrating the annual fish fry on July 4th at the house which included an abundance of fireworks which were always a part of any year round family gatherings.

David was a kind and caring person who was always there to lend a helping hand to those in need and was a true reflection of what a father should be. He will be greatly missed. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
