Sorry to read that Bill has passed. He was a good person who very much enjoyed being in nature and learning about it. I first met Bill in the late 70's at a Sierra Club meeting and related events such as the Club's annual canoe school to Turkey Run State Park, Indiana. He was one of the instructors. He was a member of the Friends of Carpenter Park and helped start a prairie across from the 300 acre woods. In 1980 Bill, I and 5 others drove to a remote area of Ontario to canoe, fish and enjoy the wilderness. He traveled with friends to other states for canoe trips such as to the Okefenokee Swamp and Wilderness area. Bill worked for the IL EPA's Field Operations Section for more than 30 years, where he was dedicated to protecting both human health and the environment from industrial pollution. In the late 80's bill became the live in caretaker for the old Adams house and wildlife sanctuary in Springfield, IL, that is now home to the IL Audubon Society headquarters. Next to the 30 acres of woods Bill started a few acre prairie that since has been expanded. He also kept bee hives in the prairie. Bill was fond of not only wild birds, but also had his own pet birds. Bill seemed to be happiest being in nature or working in the natural world with a few friends, and living in rural Petersburg away from urban Springfield. I enjoyed are talks, working with him at IL EPA, and his keen interest in the natural world and science in general. He will be missed.

I have known Bill since our AP classes at Springfield High School. Bill was such a nice person. I have never seen him mad at anyone. I also worked at IEPA but I was in Water Pollution Control Permits Section and Bill was in the Land Pollution Control Field Office. I also graduated from U of I but with a Chemical Engineering Degree. Bill's brother Mark was on a number of my sports teams. A number of people that I have worked with have expressed their condolences. I wished I could be there for the services to offer my heart felt condolences in person but couldn't. Please let us know if anything will be done in the Springfield area. It is interesting that Bill did a number of things that I have done, Like canoeing at Turkey Run and Shades State Park in Indiana. I would have liked to talk to him about this and I'm sure other adventures that we may have shared but unfortunately not together. Again my heart felt condolences goes out to the family.
