Lowell Eugene Harkness (Gene), age 88, went to see his Lord and Savior, Wednesday, June 23, 2021.

Gene graduated from Wilson High School and then joined the Marine Corps serving three years during the Korean War. After serving his country, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Coe College, where he was a member of the National Collegiate Honor Society, Phi Beta Kappa, and graduated Suma Cum Laude. He continued his education earning his master’s degree from the University of Iowa and was elected into the Academic Honor Society Phi Delta Kappa.  He taught for 33 years for the Cedar Rapids School District at Wilson Junior High School and then transferred to Taft Junior High School.

Gene had a passion for spending time with his family and many friends. His grandchildren held a very special place in his heart. He loved walking, biking, scuba diving, traveling and reading.  He had a tremendous heart for God and all people. This was evident in how he served the Lord and cared for every individual. He will be remembered for his great compassion, encouragement and kind words. Everyone who knew Gene were touched by him in some way and he will be greatly missed.

Gene is preceded in death by his brother Don Harkness.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart with whom he celebrated 69 years of marriage this year.
