Prayers and love are being sent to the entire family. I have known Jackie for many years. I know what a great person she is… a direct reflection of her parents. Loving, enthusiastic, joyful, caring, treasures the quiet moments, does random acts of kindness, hard worker, great friend/teacher/mom/daughter/sister…. person. Dad McArtor set a great example and will be sorely missed.

I am truly honored to have been “picked on by ya” during all our years of working together at the Gazette. Your poems were the best! The poem you wrote for my retirement still resides in our family photo album. May your family find comfort in all their memories. Rest In Peace my friend.

Jack was regular at our house just a few blocks from his families home on Grand Ave. Throughout our retirement years we compared notes, and shared ideas on everything. Gazette, Family, being small time landlords, Cabins, politics, health, kids, grandkids, and so much more. We are so sorry and We'll miss seeing him so much. We're thinking of the McArtor Family and share your grief. Kay and Tony Staab

Jack was an original, and I mean that in the best possible way. I was a young, smart-aleck when we worked together, and we sparred often. But we were friends, and I always enjoyed his personality and his work-ethic. He helped making working at midnight under a fair amount of stress a tolerable, even fun thing.
I became an insurance client of his wife because I knew Kathy and Jack were good people. The world needs more of their type, always will. He lived a good life, made things better. My condolences to his family.

I was in the typesetters union when I worked at Russell's Guides in the 1980's. He was in our Union with several others from the Gazette. He was welcoming to this female "newbe" <3 Sorry for the loss

I am so grateful to have had Jack be a part of my life. I have so many wonderful memories with Jack. He showed up to several of my sporting events, invited my family and me to the cabin every summer, dropped off fresh vegetables to our door throughout the summer, and always had us over for Christmas dinner where him and Kathy would tell us about all the troubles they had trying to find the items on our Christmas list. One of my favorite memories is when he helped me move some of my furniture in his truck when I was at Iowa State University. At the end of the day I asked him to just drop me off where my bike was, but when we got to the bike rack my bike was missing. He drove me all over campus trying to find it and I think he sort of got a kick out of a cyclone not remembering where they put their bike. Jack was kind and fun to talk to and I will miss visiting with him.

Jack and Kathy were great friends of my parents, (Jim and Dee McNeill). My Dad and Jack worked together at the Gazette and continued their friendship during retirement. Jack was such a character. He would come over to my Dad's to visit and as my Dad would say, "to solve all the world's problems" while they chatted on the front porch about everything and anything. Several years ago I was in town over the holidays and Jack stopped by my Dad's house. Jack rang the doorbell but no one answered (it was broken at the time!) Jack was worried because my Dad's car was there and the window blinds were open. So, Jack let himself into the house and saw me standing there. He was a bit startled and said, "You're not Dee!" I think for a second he thought he entered the wrong house! It had been many years since I had seen him. Anyway, it gave all of us had a good laugh. Over the years anytime my Dad talked about the McArtor's, he would always say "you know they still have that long green couch at their cabin!" Condolences and prayers to the McArtor family.

I haven’t know Jack as long as my husband. Kenny and Jack and Kay go back all the way to when they were in school. They did things together and when they grew up and got married they did things together as couples. There are so many stories about them I will only tell one. The land Jack & Kathy own out by Central City, Kenny was instrumental in helping them buy it. Kenny knew they were looking for some land in the country. Jack was out of town and Kenny and Kathy were riding horses when Kenny spotted the man who owned the now said land with their cabin on it. Kenny said hay there the guy that’s selling some land close to me. So they rode up and he introduced Kathy to him and after chatting awhile. The next time she spoke with Jack told him they now owned then land with their cabin on it. Kenny also used to take his boys and Mitch up to Canada fishing for years. Mitch was like a third son to Kenny. I haven’t know Jack & Kathy as long as Kenny but from our first meeting I knew they were my kind of people. Good, honest hard working folks. I was an honor to have know Jack and Kathy. We feel blessed that the week before Jack passed away he came over and we had a good visit before he went on to the cabin. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family in this time of sorrow.

We first met Jack and Moe(Kathy) in the ‘80’s. We were lucky to have been invited to the cabin several times since. Such fun times, they were wonderful gracious hosts who immediately made you feel part of the family. Special memories made “on the hill”, Gramps and his favorite glass, the Pepsi vending machine(glass bottles), four leaf clovers, outhouse, ghost poop scavenger hunt, games, puzzles, shish kabobs, tents, bunk beds, hikes, melting metal, campfires, lots of food, garden picking, entryway pavers, kayaking…I could go on and on. Thank you for so many wonderful memories. PS Jack…thank you for giving your seal of approval on our property! Meant the world!!! ????

Jackie, Mitch and family, it is amazing how many people your Dad & Mom touched in their lives! They left us all with Great Memories. Reading these other condolences from people I know who echo the same thoughts that I do speaks to how they lived their lives. I can still remember their smiles and hear their laughs fill the room. Jackie, Mitch and family, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families on the the loss of your father Jack after just recently losing your beloved mother Kathy. They were wonderful neighbors and friends to us and it didn't take long for us to find that out when we moved next door them. I remember the time my wife, Jackie had her kidney tranplant in the fall/2010. Jack wanted me to make sure I let him know when she was coming home, I found out why when we got home, it had snowed and Jack plowed our back yard so I could pull the car up, right to the door so Jackie didn't have to walk so far to get in the house and Kathy brought us a pot of soup so we would have something to eat that day, afterwards Whenever Jack would see her, he would do his "health check," asking "How you doing today?" They were a blessing to us and we told them that often. They shared a lot with us about living and growing up in Cedar Rapids, gardening, their ardent love and support for Iowa Football and Wrestling, and for the last few years, the Cubs. We spent many a day on the porch talking about whatever we felt like talking about that day, just enjoying each others company. My wife Jackie and Kathy, doing the same thing. We have a lot of wonderful memories of both of them. Jack and Kathy were the first people we met and welcomed us when we moved in next door to them on Grande Ave. and Jack with Kathy gone was the last person to tell us good bye, a hearty handshake for me and a loving hug for my wife. They will be missed!

My condolences to all of the McArtors. Jack was a great guy. I worked with him at The Gazette, and also rented a house he owned for a time. Jack was a dedicated and expert “back shop” copy layout pro, and an eagle-eye who saved me from many a typo just before the paper went to press. He was always razzing me about the Cubs (he was an avid Cardinals fan), and I rarely had a comeback for him. A fellow Navy man, we shared a common bond of respect. He was especially nice to my Mom, JoAnn, who also worked closely with Jack at The Gazette. Happy to know that he’s re-joined his beloved Kathy in heaven. Prayers, love and peace to Mitch, Jackie, and yours. Jack certainly was one of a kind!

My condolences to the entire McArtor family. I am so glad I got to know Uncle Jack and Kathy better later on in life. I so enjoyed reminiscing with them at the cabin. I was at their wedding so many years ago. They were both such wonderful, generous people, and I am sure he will be missed by family and friends. May his memories comfort you in your loss.
