Aleda (Lee) Lundquist Moeller Peters, 87, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2020 at Carolina Inn, Fayetteville, NC.
Lee, a resident of Fayetteville for 38 years, was an active member of her community and church. She excelled in her passion of Interior Design, both residential and commercial, especially medical offices and waiting rooms. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville, Women’s Circle, Chancel Choir as well as enjoyed putting her artistic skills to work for alter and church decorations. She was also an active member of the The Book Club and the Fayetteville Garden Club.
Lee (Aleda Sophia Lundquist), born to Oscar and Lenora Lundquist was raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. While attending the University of Iowa, she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority and also played bagpipes and performed in Scotland with the university’s Scottish Highlander band. She graduated from University of Iowa with a degree in home economics and married Arlyn McClay Moeller.
Lee stayed in Iowa City with her husband while he completed Medical School. Relocating to Flint, Michigan for Arlyn’s internship in family medicine and then on to Japan the following year, while Arlyn served in the Air Force for two years. Lee loved Japan. She learned a lot about the culture and art which she later incorporated into her interior design. She took classes in Ikebana, the art of Japanese flower arranging and later taught those concepts to garden clubs back in the States.
Moving back to Michigan, Arlyn set up his family practice in Essexville, and Lee focused her talent and energy on raising their three children, who, despite their mischievous tendencies, went on to successful professional careers. Essexville was their home for twenty three years. They were first members of Messiah Lutheran Church and later First Presbyterian Church in Bay City. Lee was very active and involved in many social activities in the community. She enjoyed snow skiing and boating in the northern Great Lakes, including an annual journey across Lake Huron into Canada with a close group of adventurous families from Saginaw Bay Yacht Club. She enjoyed fishing, hiking and exploring, swimming and water skiing. Lee also enjoyed painting and drawing the landscapes of the North Channel. The boat trips were both enjoyable and challenging, and served to pass the love for adventure, and the outdoors on to their children, along with a “work hard, play hard” ethic.
In the early 1970’s, Lee went back to school. She took classes in art, wildflower identification, meteorology and received a degree in Interior Design. She worked as a designer for many years, including designing interior spaces of the remodeled Bay Medical Center in Bay City.
In 1982, Lee and Arlyn moved to Fayetteville, NC and Arlyn first took a position as medical faculty at FAHEC, part of Duke University’s medical residency program, then started Fayetteville Family Medicine. Lee found new challenges in Interior Design, both in residential and commercial applications, including designing beautiful yet functional medical waiting and exam rooms. She also worked with Homemakers Furniture and Interiors and then Lynn Leath Interior Design. Lee and Arlyn continued to ski in winter and fulfill their love of snorkeling, boating and swimming while always trying to include family and friends in the Caribbean and their beach home in Ocean Isle.
Some of Lee and Arlyn’s closest friends were Bill and Judy Peters.
Arlyn died of a heart attack in 2001, and Judy died a year later. A few years later, Bill invited Lee to go on a Caribbean Cruise where he proposed to her. They became engaged and then married. Bill still lived in Michigan, where he had a law practice, so they both retired and spent summers in Michigan and winters in North Carolina and enjoyed singing in both church choirs. Lee and Bill loved traveling to visit friends and family, and when she started having health issues, they relocated full time to Fayetteville.
Lee is survived by her son, Dr. Mark Moeller (Lou), of Boulder, CO; two daughters, Laurie Owen (Russ) of Iowa City, IA and Lisa Moeller (Dr. Scott Johnson) of Eugene, OR; six grandchildren, Dr. Scott Owen (Chelsea), Trevor Owen (Adrienne), Hannah Hunt Moeller, Ellie Moeller, Erika Johnson and Nikolas Johnson; a sister, Mary McMurray (Tom), of Iowa City, IA and step-children, Susan DeMeo and Todd Peters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. William Peters and also by her first husband, Dr. Arlyn McClay Moeller, her sister Joanne Fisher, and her brother John Lundquist.
Lee’s family appreciates the loving care and kindness so generously given by friend Ann Eller, the staff at Carolina Inn, her hospice caregivers, and especially the amazing “Team Peters,” her loving caregivers: Kareena, Katrina, Sarra, Kelly and Lindsey.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories on March 28, 2020 at 3:00 pm. A visitation will be held one hour prior to service at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories.
