Memorial
Orval R. Spilde, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed peacefully in his sleep Saturday, January 12 at the age of 98.
A visitation will be on Thursday, January 17, 2019 from 4-7pm at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 18, 2019 at 10:30 AM at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Marion. Burial with military rites will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Orval was born on February 20, 1920 in Decorah, Iowa, the son of Henry and Hanna (Tilda Johanna) Spilde. He graduated from high school in 1939. He proudly served his country as an airplane mechanic in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He served in Italy, Africa, and France, and was awarded the Silver Star for bravery while in Africa.
Upon his discharge from the service, Orval married Bernadean Case in a marriage that lasted 73 years. He and Bernadean raised their family primarily in Anamosa where he owned and operated the Anamosa Body Shop and later worked as a locksmith at the Anamosa Penitentiary.
Orval was a Christian man with a deep faith, loving ways, and a wonderful sense of humor. He enjoyed nature, traveling, fishing, watching his favorite sports teams, and most of all being with family and friends.
Left to cherish Orval’s memory are his wife, Bernadean; children, Nadine (Jerry) Neal, Muriel (Bill) Logan, John (Angel) Spilde and Randy (Evelyn) Spilde; grandchildren, Melissa (Nick) Kincade, Nathan Neal, Dan (Cass) Logan, Kim (Brian) Salmon, Bethany Spilde, and Alan Spilde; great-grandchildren, Austin, Emily and Lauren Kincade, Audrey and Emma Salmon. In addition are his sister-in-law, Esther Spilde, two brothers-in-law, Bud and Gary Case, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; eight siblings, Gladys, Helen, Bessie, Harold, Leonard, Myron, Lester, and Gavin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made out to Quilts of Valor and sent to Freedom Stitchers of Iowa, 5249 N Park Place NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402 or the Iowa City VA Health Care Voluntary Service to support items for Veterans at the Iowa City VA Hospital where Orval volunteered for 25 years and received excellent care himself over the years.
