Memorial

Melvin E. Cook, 101, of Cedar Rapids died Thursday December 6, 2018 at the Meth-Wick Community.  Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday December 10, 2018 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids.  A visitation will be held 1 hr. prior to service at the church.  Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.  The Rev. Ivan Nienhaus will officiate.

Survivors include a son Robert (Denise) Cook of Marshalltown, a daughter Mary Jean Prull of Cedar Rapids, a brother Jeff Cook, 7 grandchildren; Tara Thompson, Shara Goodrich, Brian Prull, Ami Leonard, Jeremy Cook, Dan Cook, and Nate Cook; and 13 great grandchildren.   Melvin was preceded in death by his wife Mary of 68 years, a son-in- law Jim Prull, and a great grandson Shane Prull.  

Melvin was born August 12, 1917 to Ervin and Ozela (VanFleet) Cook in South English, Iowa.  He married Mary Dahlem on September 19, 1942 at St. Patrick’s Church in Cedar Rapids.  Melvin worked as a firefighter for the Cedar Rapids Fire Dept.    When he left the fire department he was district chief of the east side.  

Memorial donations may be directed to the family, or St. Patrick’s Church, or the Cedar Rapids Fire Dept.
