Memorial

Dorothy Olga Allison Nemecek, 95, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa passed away Sunday December 16, 2018 at Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha.  Services 10:30 am Friday December 21, 2018 at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories with Father Ken Glaser of St Ludmila’s Catholic Church.  Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.  Friends may call from 4 to 7 pm Thursday December 20 at the Chapel of Memories Stateroom, and one hour prior to the service.  

Survivors include a son, Jim Nemecek of Center Point and a daughter, Judi Dolezal of Ely.  Sisters, Olga(Cletus)McNamara of Anamosa, and Emily Suchomel of Solon.  A brother, Tom(Virginia)Bena of Strawberry Point.  Four grandchildren; Patrick(Wendy)Dolezal of Bemidji, Minnesota, Sally(Dave)Davis of Glencoe, Minnesota, Amy(Mike)Readnour of Robins, Iowa, and James(Susan)Slade.  Ten great-grandchildren; Chelsea and Ashley Dolezal, Nelson(Hannah)Davis, Levi(Amber)Davis, Piper Davis, Seth and Katelyn Readnour, Austin and Cy Slade, and Cassie Schindler.  Great-great grandchildren, Theodore and Cameron Davis, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Marvin Charles, two brothers, Charles John and John Bena.  A sister, MaryAnn Syroid, two sisters-in laws, Faye Bena and Alma John.  Two brothers-in laws, Bernard Suchomel and Paul Syroid.  Her father and mother-in law, Charles and Rose Nemecek.  A great-great-granddaughter, Ellie Davis.

Dorothy was born July 10, 1923 in Fairfax Iowa, to Madison and Olga Suchomel Allison.  She married Marvin Nemecek on June 3, 1941 at St. Wenceslaus Church.  He passed away in 1994.

She worked at Wilson & Co., for 3 years.  She was employed by the Cedar Rapids Community School District as manager/cook for 27 ½ years at Hayes School cafeteria until it closed.  She then worked for 7 years as manager/cook at the Educational Service Center cafeteria, retiring in 1988.  During that time, with Marv by her side, she also managed the VFW Post 788 Club for 11 years from 1972 to early 1983.  They catered many weddings and bowling banquets.  In her younger years she enjoyed dancing, bowling, playing pinochle, boating and camping.  She cherished time spent with family, enjoyed helping make kolaches at church, volunteering at P3 retirees club, the VFW, gardening to make pickles to share, and socializing with her many friends.  She was the Senior Volunteer of the year for 2014 in Iowa.  She also enjoyed her Busch Lite beer and going to the casino. Dorothy was a member of St. Ludmila Catholic Church, a life member and past president of the VFW Post 788 Auxiliary, AARP, P3 Retirees Club, Friendship Circle, Coffee Club, the LOL group(now cousin’s lunch group), and WFLA 262.  She was also a Bluebird and Campfire Girls’ leader.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Ludmila Catholic Church, VFW Post 788, or the donor’s choice.
