Memorial
Norman Thomas Peyton died peacefully at his home in Marion on Monday, April 2, 2018. Memorial Services: 11:00 a.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, where a visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. The Rev. Brian Hill will officiate. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Philena, his children Doug (Trish) of Marion, their son, Thomas, Dave of Las Vegas, Tim of Marion, Amy of Marion, her daughters Isabella and Bryana, Josh (Sara) of Cedar Rapids, their son Christopher, Mark Pollock (Kirsten) of Darlington, Wisconsin, their sons Mitch (Allison) and Will (Ashley), sister-in-law Annette Lyphout, niece Laura (Rocky) Daniels, nephew Curtis (Kirsti) Lyphout, and brother Richard (Mary) Peyton.
Norm was born on March 9, 1935 in Waterloo, Iowa to Donald and Jean Peyton. He graduated from McKinley High, Cedar Rapids in 1953. He served in the Marines from 1953-1956. He began work at Collins Radio in 1959, where he met Philena Ondler, whom he married on September 17, 1960, in Walker, Iowa. Norm retired from Rockwell Collins in 1994.
Norm’s dedication and love for his family was unwavering. He was a kind husband, a remarkable father and a loving grandfather. He loved hunting, fishing, harvesting mushrooms and walnuts, fastpitch softball, basketball, bowling and metal detecting. He was on the Coe College football chain gang for 25 years, was a Gazette newspaper carrier for over 30 years, and was inducted into the Marion High School Hall of Fame in 2002 for three decades of volunteer service. He was a foster parent to many children who came through his home over the years. After retirement, Norm enjoyed antiquing dates with Philena, long walks with his grandchildren, painting water colors, woodworking, jigsaw puzzles and watching movie classics. He attended Faith Bible Church. Special thanks to Gary Sondag for visiting Norm faithfully during his illnesses.
Norm was preceded in death by his parents. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
