Julia, Jennifer and families, I met John at the “Ponerosa” on Ivanhoe road. He was a newlywed and lived in an apartment at the end of our huge country home. The entire Hasley clan (all 12 kids and Leone and Jerry), and myself especially, were so fond of your dad. He was always available to help with the garden, can tomatoes, play bridge, tell stories, as well as tip a “few” with my Dad. I my memories of John, he always has a smiling face. He seemed to always bring calm to the chaos of Hasley family life. He almost always entered our home through the kitchen door. The kitchen was always buzzing with activity. He loved all the kids, and the constant activity of life in a huge family. He’d chat with my parents, joke with us kids, grab a bite of home made bread and maybe set a time for a bridge game later that evening . John seemed to always be there for everthing: horse shoeing Sis our horse, planting the garden, canning, watching Dad fix the tractor, helping Dad with barbeques, observing and adding ideas to Dad’s wine making projects. The list is endless! John was always there. Always smiling and giggling. He added a lot of sparkle to our lives! Those were such precious days for us all! Your parents were both wonderful people. I am so happy they were part of my life. They will be missed. Their time with us Hasleys was truly golden. May John and Kathy both rest in eternal peace. Rose Mary Hasley Chase

Dear family and friends, please accept my deepest condolences. May God's promises found at Acts 24:15 and Psalms 37:29 bring you comfort during this difficult time.

Spent nine years working with John at Wagners Printers. We played cribbage together, fished at Bellevue and Mark Twain together and various other locations. Last saw him at the Lion and caught up on some old memories. It was always good, sorry to hear of his passing. Denny Kelly

Julia, Jennifer and Families.....we were deeply saddened to read of the passing of such a loved one. We send our sincere condolences, thoughts, and prayers to your fine family. We continue to keep your Mother in our prayers.

Miss you already, John. Our phone calls and emails - & so many memories, going way back to Hampton, Iowa. We walked to school together for years & I put up with your teasing & humor. I wanted to learn to play golf, but you & John Marschall told me I slowed you down. We had a couple of years in college together, too. More than 80 years with you as my brother were pretty great. Many memories.

My condolences to the family. I have known John for many years. In fact he and I were the Ex Club team that won the Cribbage Tournament in the service club Olympics many years ago. I most recently visited with John at the Red Lion and we discussed that event. Sorry to hear of his passing.

John was a great and attentive salesman for Wagner Printers. He serviced my financial advertising printing account with great skill and gentlemanly aplomb. Nothing I ever asked of his company was denied to our company. No one in my 23 years of service served us better than kindly John Gutz. I will remember him always.

Julia, Jennifer, and family - I am so very sad to hear of this sudden loss. I know you had some great new plans, but I guess it was not meant to be. Was looking forward to seeing you guys, but not like this. I will always remember your father as a kind and funny man, always welcoming. (AND, very understanding.... Julia - remember the French Toast incident in elementary school?!?! - and he snuck us the donuts anyway! :) I have always remembered that!) Happy to help in ANY WAY once you and Jennifer get to next steps. He will be your shining light at the Holidays as he smiles down at you all. Hugs to all

Julia, I was able to keep track of you through your Dad, when he'd stop into the Home Port. He also keep Louie entertained with the 31 or 33 polls. The two were funny talking of the sports. Both fit that armchair coach well. Your Dad was a great and gentle man, and funny at times also! I had a lot of talks with him and he always made it a point to tell me Hi!, for you and the same from me. Hold tight those memories and speak to that grandson of his Grandfather and how he will miss him. Take care, for you and your Family and Families are in my prayers. May he rest in peace for the pain has gone.

I offer my deepest sympathy and prayers to John's family. I met John about 15 years ago and had many enjoyable conversations sharing views on numerous subjects and solving the world's problems. Being that I was born and raised in the West Union area, we discovered that we knew many of the same people and discussed the good old days & points of interest in Northeast Iowa. John will be greatly missed and remembered for a very long time. Oz
