Richard W. (Dick) Satern, 91, of Toddville, IA, passed away on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at the Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 7, 2017, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, Chapel of Memories. The family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 12:00 p.m., at the chapel. Interment with military rites will be at the Shiloh Cemetery in Hiawatha, IA.
Memorials, if desired, may be directed to the Toddville American Legion Post 674, Otter Creek Lions Club, or the Leader Dogs for the Blind Association.
Dick was born on March 17, 1926, in Ottosen, Iowa to John and Lillie (Hundertmark) Satern.
He enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17 and served over 2 years as a Radio Operator in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
He was united in marriage to Vera Baumgarn on February 14, 1948, until her passing on April 22, 1993. They had four children Mark Satern, Phoenix, AZ; Miriam Satern, Macomb, IL; Monte (Karen) Satern, Gasquet, CA; and Mary (Mark) Sarchett, Marion, IA.
Following his military service, Dick worked as an Agent-Operator for the Rock Island Railroad for 35 years. Upon the closure of the Rock, he worked for Pennick and Ford as a Traffic Manager before retiring in 1986. During his working years and retirement he also farmed near Toddville.
On December 5, 1997, he married Margaret (Marge) DeSousa. With this union he enjoyed the addition of 5 step-children to his family -- Ray (Tamuna) DeSousa, Mainesville, OH; Phil DeSousa, deceased; Mary (Frank) Trimble, Hiawatha, IA; Kathy (Ray) Lett, Garland, TX; and Joel (Sue) DeSousa, Cedar Rapids, IA.
Dick was a long time, active member of the Toddville American Legion and the Otter Creek Lions Club. He also was involved with the VFW, USS Delta Association, and the Armed Guard Liaisons. As a result of his service in the Lions organization, he was recognized by the Iowa Lions Foundation with the Warren Coleman Honorary Award and by the Lions International Foundation with the Melvin Jones Fellow for dedicated humanitarian services.
Dick is survived by his wife Marge; sister Beryl Edwards, Moline, IL; his four children; three grandchildren – Emily (Randy) Medeiros, Sacramento, CA; Tina Sarchett, Fairfax, IA; and Lucas (Erica) Satern, Grants Pass, OR; two great grandchildren – Ethan Satern and Holden Medeiros; 4 step-children and their families; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Vera; his brother Maynard Satern and 3 sisters -- Delores DeBoo, Ilo Watson, and Nella Satern.
