Alberta Mary Van Nest, 100, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Sunday, September 25, 2016 at Village Ridge in Marion.

Memorial services will be at 1:00 PM on Thursday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories.  Inurnment at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories Mausoleum Columbarium. Arrangements entrusted to Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Survivors include her three children: Hal E. (Jule) Van Nest, Jr., Moline, Illinois; daughters Patricia A. Griffin, Charles City, Iowa; and Sandra K. (Roger) Giegerich, Sebring, Florida; eight grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her sisters: Sr. Dolores McAllister, Dubuque, Iowa; Rita Hoffmann, Greendale, Wisconsin; and Cecelia (Joseph) Koob, Monticello, Iowa; and one brother, Joseph (Marge) McAllister, Jr., Palmetto, Florida.

Alberta was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hal E. Van Nest, Sr. in July 2007 and they would have celebrated seventy-two years of marriage in August 2007; her parents Joseph and Angeline McAllister; four sisters: Kathleen McAllister, Irene Huber, Loretta Minton, and Margaret Bakey; and six brothers: James, Donald, Paul, Robert, Charles, and Thomas.

Alberta Van Nest was born August 17, 1916 at home in Cascade, Iowa, the beloved daughter of Joseph and Angeline McAllister.

She was united in marriage to Hal E. Van Nest, Sr. on August 17, 1935 at Nativity Catholic Church, Dubuque.  Alberta worked for many years at JC Penney, Dubuque, and then at Me Too Grocery Store for twenty-two years in Cedar Rapids.  She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, and a member of The Womans Club of Cedar Rapids, former member of St. Luke’s, Mercy Hospital, and Camp Courageous Bridge Clubs.  She also volunteered for fourteen years at St. Luke’s and six years at Mercy Hospital.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend of many, and will be missed by her family and friends.
