Memorial

Jack Harold  Eggleston, 88, of Hiawatha died Sunday December 18, 2016 at Cottage Grove Place. Memorial service at 6:00 PM on Thursday at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home where friends may call from 4:00 PM until service time on Thursday. Inurnment in the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel Mausoleum Columbarium.

Jack was born February 16, 1928 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Harold and Wilma (Krause) Eggleston. Jack joined the Marine Corps in 1946 after graduating from Franklin High School. After his discharge, he attended Coe College and played football on the GI bill. Jack married Rebecca Thompson in February 1949. He then went to work for the Cedar Rapids streets department and became streets commissioner in the early 1960s. 

In 1964, Jack founded E & F Cement and Asphalt Concrete Company with partners Leo and Edward Fitzpatrick. Their partnership lasted until 2000 doing work in Cedar Rapids and surrounding areas. Jack enjoyed his construction company and all the people he worked with over the years. He often talked fondly of his many business relationships later in life. 
Jack was an Eagle Scout, Mason and proud Marine until his death. Jack and Becky enjoyed traveling and spending time together at their homes in Sun City West, AZ, and Crosslake, MN. Jack was a loyal Hawkeye holding season tickets for almost 50 years. He became a young fan while ushering games as a boy scout and loved to tailgate with friends. 

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Wilma; wife, Rebecca; sister, Darlene Olson; and brother, Gerald Eggleston.

He is survived by his son, Rick (Linda) Eggleston; grandchildren, Chad (Kristie) Eggleston, and Holly Hartling; great-grandchildren, Jack, Owen, Finley, and Saylor, and his devoted dog, BeeJay.

Jack’s family would like to thank Hospice of Mercy and the staff and Cottage Grove for the kind and attentive care Jack received during his brief illness.
