Mary Benda passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at the Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha surrounded by her loving family. After her valiant fight with cancer more than 20 years ago, Mary resumed her battle in September 2011. Her strong will to live, unwavering faith in God and the love and prayers of family, friends and many supporters carried through these additional years.

Mary was born in Cresco Iowa to Irvin and Emilie Moudry. The second oldest of four children, Mary moved to Cedar Rapids shortly after graduating from South Winneshiek High School. Mary then married and had two daughters, Jennifer and Michelle, who were her pride and joy. In 1987, Mary met Bill Eichhorst, with whom she enjoyed a wonderful and loving relationship for more than 29 years. The couple resided in Cedar Rapids, until they built their dream home together in Swisher, IA.

Mary was employed the by the Quaker Oats company for 35 years, where she made many cherished and dear friendships. During the flood of 2008, Mary was honored to be selected as a representative of Quaker Oats, to work with the United Way, in assisting flood victims. Following her retirement in 2012, Mary became a member of the Cedar Rapids Garden Club. Mary’s flowers and beautiful garden were a true labor of love, providing her with many hours of peace and enjoyment.

Mary never met a person who did not walk away as a friend. Her warm smile and effervescent enthusiasm were contagious. She loved all animals, especially dogs, horses and birds. Mary enjoyed travel, taking many special trips with Bill to visit her daughters, siblings and their families. Mary was the light and sunshine in all of our lives.

Left to cherish Mary’s memories are: Mary’s husband, William Eichhorst, of Swisher, IA, daughters Jennifer (Tom) Ebner, of Cherry Hills Village, CO, Michelle Benda, of Cherry Hills Village, CO, step daughters Angela (Cindy Clark) Eichhorst of Iowa City and Allyson (Don) Kearney, Marion, IA., siblings Janet (Lee) Sage Blaine, MN, Dean (Connie) Moudry, of Spillville, IA, Noreen Hageman, of Luana, IA and beloved nieces, nephews, grandchildren and her two dogs Gracie, and Ellie.
