John D. Hunt, 89, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, June 9, 2014 at Emeritus at Silver Pines, Cedar Rapids.

A funeral service celebrating John’s life will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, June 16, 2014 at the Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel with Cedar Memorial Certified Celebrant Jim Parton officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from noon until 2:00 pm at the Westside Chapel on Monday.

Survivors include his children, David (Joann) Hunt, Paul (Diane) Hunt and Beverly (Jesse) Moore, all of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Jeff Estensen of Alaska, Jessica Hunt, Shayna (Tim) Franks, Ashley Schmuecker, Cole Schmuecker and Jonah Moore all of Cedar Rapids; three great grandchildren, Halla, Gemma and Titus; brother, Harold (Anne) Hunt of England; sister, Joyce (Ken) Surman of Canada.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Joyce Hunt, infant son Christopher, daughter Michelle Hunt and sister Enid.

John Duke Hunt was born April 13, 1925 in Ontario, Canada the son of John & Doris (Pendleton) Hunt. The family moved back to England during the Depression and he served first in the Home Guard while a teenager and then the Royal Air Force during World War II.  On March 3, 1951 he married Joyce Goldingay in England. She died in 2004. He moved his family to Canada in 1957 and then to Cedar Rapids in 1960 when SquareD offered him a job. John worked as an engineer at Square D. Co. for almost 30 years.  He enjoyed writing books, gardening and helped with starting the Cedar Rapids Comets Soccer team during the late 1960’s. 

He was a loving father, husband and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.
