Jess C. “Skip” Frakes Jr., 67, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday May 31, 2013 in the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. A visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home with a Celebration of Life Service at 5:30 p.m. Survivors include his daughters; Suzanne (Chris) Jennings of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Paula (Gregg Aune) Frakes of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; granddaughters Emily and Kylie Jennings; a sister, Gayle (Roger) Beers of Luverne, Minnesota, a sister-in-law, Esther Frakes of Luverne, Minnesota and former wife, Carol (Hagen) Newell of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dallis Frakes. Jess was born October 27, 1945 in Luverne, Minnesota, the son of Jess and Amelia (Hovland) Frakes Sr. He married Carol (Hagen) Newell in 1964 and they divorced in 1985. Skip was an Art teacher for the Cherokee Community Schools in Cherokee. He was a member and secretary for both Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club and Upper Great Plaines Muskies Inc. Skip coached 7th grade boy’s basketball and 9-12 girl’s golf. He enjoyed playing cards, reading crime and mystery books and playing pool. Skip loved to draw-creating art work for his granddaughters and many covers for the concerts in the Cherokee Community Schools. He was a master Muskie Fisherman. His favorite pastime was enjoying time with his family, granddaughters and grand dogs. He was a real people’s person and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
