Richard Cornwell, 91, of Cedar Rapids passed away on Wednesday, January 30 at Willow Gardens Care Center in Marion. Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 3 from 2:00 to 6:00 PM at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Service will be held on Monday, February 4 at 10:30 AM at First Assembly of God with Pastor Rick Gail officiating. Burial will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.Richard Hamilton Cornwell was born on January 6, 1922 to Ray and Carrie Hamilton Cornwell in Iowa City. He enlisted in the Army Ordinance II World War. He was sent to England’s Ordinance Depot and was in the invasion of France in Normandy. He was transferred to the 95th Division Co. “E” and went through the Battle of the Bulge. Richard went through France and Germany and mustered out in 1945. He was united in marriage to Doris Staub on January 10, 1946 in Cedar Rapids. She preceded him in death in 1995. He loved reading and getting lost in a book store. After working for HK Staub & Son’s Construction, he went into the refrigeration and air conditioning business. He loved woodworking and had many different wood projects. He is survived by his children, Mary Wiyrick and Kenneth (Vicki) Cornwell both of Cedar Rapids; Lois (Max Martinez) Vent of Colorado Springs, CO; and Joanne (Earl) Gosselin of Elbert, CO; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild. Memorial donations may be made in Richards Cornwell’s name.
