Purpose and Objectives

In a society that promotes "faster and easier", our speaker, Dr. Alan Wolfelt, will teach the value of a slower and more personal grieving process.

Participants will learn the three forgotten truths surrounding grief and loss, and that “old-fashioned” customs sometimes trump “newfangled” theories, and how those who walked before us have much to teach us about the mysteries of life and death. They will learn about the wisdom anchored in the three paradoxical truths of mourning, which include the following assertions:

  • You must say hello before you can say goodbye
  • You must make friends with the darkness before you can move forward
  • You must go backward before you can move forward

Learner Objectives

  1. Discuss how to use the "Three Forgotten Truths" when counseling the dying and the families facing a death loss.
  2. Define the concept of paradox in relationship to grief and mourning.
  3. Describe how different influences affect the paradoxes.
  4. Demonstrate the advantages of the "Slow Grief Movement."
