Memorial

Donald L. Taylor, 84, of Cedar Rapids, died at the Woodlands of the MethWick Community on Thursday, February 02, 2012. Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. James United Methodist Church by the Rev. Beth Mary Harbaugh. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors. A visitation will be held on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel and after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mary Alida; sons, Don “Butch” (Pam) Taylor of Cedar Rapids and John (Bonnie)Taylor of Robins; four grandchildren, Megan (Greg Montour) Taylor, Matt Taylor, Robert Taylor, and Colin Taylor. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, two sisters, two step-sisters, one step-brother, and one great grandson, Robert Edward Montour.

Don was born February 20, 1927 in Cedar Rapids to William and Rose Taylor. He married Mary Alida Vosdingh there on May 18, 1947. He was a Navy veteran of WWII, serving on the USS Lexington in the South Pacific. Don worked for Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric Company for over 43 years, retiring in 1989. Don was a charter member of the Golden K Kiwanis, founder of the Cannonball Eight Bowling League, a former board member of the All Iowa Fair and the YMCA. He was an active member of St. James United Methodist Church for 56 years. Don loved yard work, his dogs, and spending time with his family.

The family would like to thank “Don’s Girls” at the Woodlands as well as the staff at Hospice of Mercy for the loving care they provided.

A memorial fund has been established.
