Irene Luceal Cady Roscoe, 94, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died August 25, 2010 at Willow Gardens Care Center in Marion following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. The Rev. Dr. William Jamison will officiate. Friends may call from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, on Monday, August 30, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Surviving are her daughter Jerene “Jeri” Thomas of Marion; grandchildren, Jerilynn “Lynn” Thomas (Marty Ortgies) of Anamosa, Joanne “Jo” Marshall (Scott) of Arlington, Texas, and Kevin (Janine) Thomas of Freeport, Illinois; great grandchildren, Zachary, Emily, and Mackenzie Thomas, and Julien, Jordan, and Jaedan Marshall; great great granddaughter Gwendalyn Epling; brothers Edward E. St. Germain of Rohnert Park, California and Ernest D. St. Germain of San Jose, California; as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands, a son-in-law Edwin Thomas, a grandson Craig Thomas, and brothers Cecil, Harry, and Raymond.
Irene was born February 14, 1916 in Frazee, Minnesota the daughter of Ernest and Katherine (Sheeley) St. Germain. She married Gerald A. Cady on August 30, 1936 in Los Angeles, CA. She and Gerald had one daughter, Jerene. Gerald preceded her in death on September 30, 1958. She married Frank J. Roscoe on April 28, 1962 in Iowa City; he preceded her in death on December 21, 1990. She was employed for 27 years in the Medical Records Department at Mercy Medical Center. For many years she was a proud member of the American Legion Hanford Post # 5 Auxiliary, holding every position of leadership, including Linn County President and Second District President. Irene and her husband were regular attendees of American Legion National Conventions. She selflessly donated her time to the many events at the post, and the causes it supports. She and other auxiliary members began the program continued today by her daughter Jeri, of placing thousands of flags on the graves of deceased veterans at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. She was also a member of the Bowling 500 Club, and Calvin Sinclair Presbyterian Church. She volunteered on a regular basis at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City and made many trips to the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown. She will be greatly missed, but forever remembered for her sense of humor and continuous support of the American Legion.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staffs of Willow Gardens, Hospice of Mercy, and Dr. Thomas Schroeder for their kind care and compassion shown to the entire family.
