Franklin “Butch” Michalec, 71, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday August 19, 2010 at his home from a sudden illness. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ludmila Catholic Church where visitation will be Monday from 4-8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Karen, his children, Frank W. Michalec of Cedar Rapids, Carolyn A. Rubner and husband Randy of Newhall, Stephen P. Michalec and wife Tammara of Amana, Mark A. Michalec and wife Amy, Lonnie J. Michalec, Rodney J. Michalec and wife Linnea, and Troy A. Michalec and wife Lisa all of Cedar Rapids, his mother in law, Viola Hamer of Cedar Rapids, his good friend, Tom Sanders of Cedar Rapids, 10 siblings, 19 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and one soon to be great granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Butch was born December 23, 1938 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Francis and Mary Phillip Michalec. He married Karen I. Hamer on July 11, 1977 in Rock Island, Illinois. Butch was a machinist for Universal Engineering in Cedar Rapids and a member of St. Ludmila Catholic Church. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and loved spending time with his family. Butch was hard working and was always helping people in need. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and taking trips with the boys. He was a die hard Cub and Cowboys fan.
A memorial fund has been established by the family.
