Memorial
Mildred B. Schirm Cannon, 98, of Cedar Rapids, went to be with the Lord on January 15, 2010 at Living Center East following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM, Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Marty Garrison of Hope United Church of Christ will officiate. Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Monday, January 18, 2010 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Internment will take place at the Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Surviving include one son Ron Schirm and wife Donna Wray, one daughter Marilyn and husband Gordon of Aurora, IL, and daughter-in-law Janette Schirm of Cedar Rapids. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, one step great grandchild, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents Charles Winn and Myrtle Winn Mathis, two husbands, one son Gary Schirm, and two sisters Grace Lyman and Evelyn Condon.
Mildred was born November 9, 1911 in Walker, Iowa. She married H.W. (Jim) Schirm on December 16, 1929 in Cedar Rapids; he died on December 2, 1952. She later married Earl Cannon on May 18, 1968 on Aurora, IL; he died July 27, 1971. She graduated from Grant High School in Cedar Rapids in 1929. She worked as a clerk at Pennick & Ford, Cryovac, Globe Machinery & Supply Company, and later as a housekeeper for Merchants National Bank for several years. She was previously a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids where she was a home missionary, and a member of the Good Samaritans for many years. She was a member of the Witwer and Asbury Senior Centers. In recent years, she was attending Cedar Rapids Baptist Church. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, singing, playing cards, and traveling often with her sister Evelyn. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend who will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Mercy in Mildred’s honor.
