Harold F. Birky

My sincere condolences to Dorothy and the rest of Harold's family. Harold was my boss for three summers when I worked at Kennedy as a college student doing summer maintenance. If you'll indulge me, I'll share a brief story about Harold, and how he continued to remember me for more than two decades. One day, I was walking down the central hallway at Kennedy, en route to the far end of the school for a work assignment. As I reached the central section of the school, I came across Harold, who was working on the floor. Harold greeted me, and then warned me about the condition of the floor, saying "if you walk through my clean floor, your name will be Mud." I wasn't sure which section of floor he was referring to, so of course, I stepped exactly where I shouldn't have. And from then on, my name was no longer Richard -- it was "Mud." The last time I saw Harold, he referred to me as "Mud," more than 20 years after we had last worked together. Naturally, it was a tern of endearment. I don't believe Harold had an enemy in this world. He was always one of my favorite bosses, and I'd like to think I was one of his favorite summer workers. Rest in peace, Harold. You've worked hard for it. If the family sees this before Harold's service, feel free to share it. Again, my blessings to Harold's friends and family. He will be dearly missed.
