Memorial

Richard Paul Moore, 63, of Coralville, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died July 16, 2009 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a brain herniation. Memorial services will be held 11:00 AM, Monday July 20, 2009 at First Lutheran Church. Rev. Daniel Kolander will officiate. Friends may call Sunday, July 19, 2009 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, and after 10:15 AM Monday at the church. Private inurnment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife Evelyn; daughters Dani Elgas and husband Todd of Davenport and Caite Moore of Iowa City; his father Jim Moore of Tipton; sisters Mary Suchomel and husband Jim of Naples, FL and Colleen Wilson and husband Ralph of Baudette, MN; step children Gary Benda of Keokuk, Erin Kennedy and husband Wade Phillips of Cedar Rapids, and Kelly Gonzales and husband Nik of Omaha, NE; his grandchildren Garrett, Sammy, Karsen, Ashton, and Leah; as well as numerous extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his mother Lucille, his first wife Virginia, sister Linda Moore, step mother Phyllis, and step son Joey Benda.

Richard Paul Moore was born November 30, 1945 in Iowa City, Iowa the son of James and Lucille (Fagan) Moore. He was valedictorian at Tipton High School and went on to receive his Bachelors in Business Administration and Juris Doctorate Degrees from the University of Iowa. He was married to Virginia Andersen on June 28, 1975 in Cedar Rapids; she preceded him in death on April 20, 1992. On April 21, 2002 he married Evelyn Boege Benda at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. He was employed by the firm of Moyer and Bergman for over 20 years. He was also a Private Mediator, served as the chair of the Iowa Public Employee Relations Board, and until his retirement was an Administrative Law Judge of the 6th Judicial District. He was a member of the Congenial 100 Dance Club, Iowa State Bar Association, and First Lutheran Church for 33 years. He also was a member of the Hawkeye Bicycle Club and the Linn County I Club where he was a former president for both organizations. He enjoyed dancing, watching the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes, was an avid reader, road in numerous RAGBRAI’s, enjoyed golf, and was a collector of many of the books “For Dummies”. He was a loving husband, son, father, brother, grandfather, and friend who will be greatly missed by all.

Memorial donations in his honor may be made to The University of Iowa Foundation-Lung Transplant Program, or to First Lutheran Church.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr.’s Klesney-Tait & Parekh along with all the members of the University of Iowa health care team with whom he came in contact for their care. The family also extends their sincere appreciation to the gift of life from Chris Hillbolt, a 17 year old donor from Prague, OK. His generosity enabled Dick to have a second birthday on November 10, 2008 following a double lung transplant.
