Mary A. Spurrier, 100, a resident of Ridgeview Assisted Living passed away July 7, 2009 following a brief illness. Friends may call at First Congregational Church on Saturday, July 11th at 10:00 AM. A Celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 AM by the Rev. David Hohmann followed by burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mary Aebi Spurrier was born on August 5, 1908 on the family farm near Sand Springs, Iowa, the ninth of eleven children of Rudolph and Rosa Aebi-Steffen, an immigrant family who came from Bern, Switzerland in 1906. When the family moved to Monticello, IA she often helped at the Aebi Sweet Shop. She graduated from Monticello High School in 1927 and attended the alumni reunion in 2007 as the eldest graduate present. Upon moving to Cedar Rapids, she attended the Cedar Rapids Business College in 1928.

During her secretarial career she worked at the T.M. Sinclair Company, National Oats Co., before becoming secretary at various brokerage firms. She retired from the Francis I. du Pont Co. in 1971. On August 31, 1933 Mary married Harold K. Spurrier at First Christian Church where they sang in the choir for forty years. Harold passed away in 2001 shortly before their 68th wedding anniversary. Upon retirement they worked as a team for fourteen years escorting tours in the U.S.A. and abroad for Travel and Transport. She was a member of the Cedar Rapids Camera Club, St. Luke’s Hospital Auxillary and First Congregational Church.

Aunt Mary is survived by seven nieces and nephews, Linda Smith, Cedar Rapids, Helen Homer, Cross Lanes, WV, Colleen Savino, Ft. Meyers, FL, Deborah Forgione, McComb, OK, Warren Olson, Denison, IA, William Barry, Fairchild, WI and Robert Barry of Solon, IA and numerous great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters, Margaritha, Elizabeth, Hanna, Gertrude, Hedwig, and Rose and her brothers, Rudolph Jr., Hans, Ernest and Elmer.

Aunt Mary will be dearly missed by all her family and friends. Memorials may be made in her name to First Congregational Church, Camp Courageous of Iowa or St. Luke’s Hospice. The family would like to thank the staff at Ridge View Assisted Living, St. Luke’s Hospice and several friends for the loving care she was given at the end of her long life.
