Mary Evelyn Meyer-Hartz, 83, a resident of Living Center West, died there Wednesday May 13, 2009 in the loving presence of her family. A Celebration of Life service will be held today 2:00 p.m. at Silver Pines Care Center where she was a resident for four years. Inurnment: At a later date in June at Rock Island National Cemetery in Rock Island, Illinois. Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her children, Amelia Warner (Gene) of Solon, Mark Meyer of Cedar Rapids, and Melody Meyer of Soquel, California, a brother, Ralph Long of Green Valley, Arizona, a sister, Emma Jean Smith of Kansas City, Kansas, her grandchildren, Becky Harris of Morgan Hill, California, Devin Morrison of Ocean side, California, Matt Post of Johnston, Iowa, Ted Meyer of Cedar Rapids, Harrison Meyer of Cedar Rapids, Amelia Rose Meyer of Cedar Rapids, Matt Warner of Cedar Rapids and Kurt Warner of Paradise Valley, Arizona, and 11 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband Henry in 1998.
Mary was born June 15, 1925 in North English, the daughter of Rollie and Ruth Bowser Long. She married Floyd H. Meyer on December 9, 1943 in Cedar Rapids. She later married Henry F. Hartz on May 12, 1984 in Davenport. Mary was the secretary and stenographer to the Trainmaster at the Rock Island Railroad and later for the Chicago Northwestern Rail Road. Mary loved the railroad and all things trains and was nick named “Choo-Choo” by her grandchildren. She was a life long member of Olivet Presbyterian Church and was a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church in Bettendorf. She was a doting mother and was so proud of all of her children and their accomplishments. Mary loved LIFE, art, travel, music, cooking and had an appreciation for all things beautiful. Her homes were always gorgeous as was she! She was a gourmet cook and an excellent seamstress. In 1956 she won the state Singer Sewing Contest and then won 2nd place at the national finals in New York City for the outfit she made. Her love of travel took her on many trips as she traveled with Henry for International Rotary. Their trip to China in 1989 was a treasured memory.
