Virtus C. Lorenzen, 88, of Anamosa, died May 17, 2009 in his home following a sudden illness. Funeral services will be held 11:30 AM, Saturday, May, 23, 2009 at the Olin Community United Methodist Church. Pastor Pat Slater will officiate. Friends may call from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, May 22, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Entombment will take place at 3:00 PM on Saturday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories Mausoleum.
Survivors include his daughter Michele Vondracek and husband Wesley of Cedar Rapids; granddaughters Kim and Kristin Vondracek both of Cedar Rapids; great grandchildren Alexis and Detrick of Cedar Rapids; a sister Lois Fisher of Mt. Vernon, and brother Grover Lorenzen and wife Mary of Olin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary, a sister Helen Norton, and grandson Jason Vondracek.
Virt was born October 23, 1920 in Jones County, Iowa the son of Louis and Margaret (Rohwedder) Lorenzen. He was a graduate of Olin High School where he was involved with the 4H club showing cattle throughout the Midwest. He was united in marriage to Mary Tressa Taylor on October 1, 1943 in Anamosa. He owned and operated a crop and cattle farm near Olin for several years, as well as a farm near Anamosa. He was a previous member of the school board in Olin, a member of the Cattlemen’s Association, and one of the bank directors at Citizen’s State Bank in Wyoming and Olin. Following his retirement he enjoyed numerous trips with Mary. They would yearly travel to Hawaii, and had a memorable trip via train to watch the Iowa Hawkeyes compete in the Rose Bowl. He enjoyed golf and was a member of the Fawn Creek Country Club. He was an avid Hawkeye fan, and enjoyed watching professional sports, especially the Chicago Cubs. He was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to many who will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established. Funds may be directed to 3303 Ely Road SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52404.
