Memorial

Stephen L. Smith, 64, of the Harmony House in Waterloo, formerly of Hiawatha died Friday April 24, 2009 at Harmony House after an extended illness. Memorial services at 1:00 PM on Saturday May 2, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Barb, a daughter, Jennifer (Rick) Rigel of Cedar Rapids, a son, Lynn (Karren)of Keystone, a stepson, Matthew (Cheri) Rasmussen of Everett, Washington, a stepdaughter, Angela (Charlie) of Odenton, Maryland and a brother, Keith (Jeanne) of Maine. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Jada, Emily, Sonja and Alexander, two sisters-in-law, Monica and MaryJo Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Nile and Kenneth.

Stephen was born on Nov. 18, 1944 in Marion, the son of Frank and Gertrude Bateman Smith. He married Fran Rawson on Feb. 13, 1966 in Marion. They were later divorced. He then married Barbara L. Vieth on June 4, 1999 in Cedar Rapids. Stephen was a professor of computer programming at Kirkwood College for 10 years. He was not only a generous person, but was an inspiring teacher, father, husband and grandfather. He enjoyed fishing and ran in the Marine Corps Marathon in 1989. Stephen was a friend of Bill W. since 1987.

Memorial donations may be given to the Humane Society in Stephen’s name.
