Born Dorothy Donnella in Richmond, Virginia, on October 4, 1910, she was the oldest of five children of George F. and Marian Harrison Donnella. In her youth Dorothy’s family moved to the District of Columbia, where she graduated from Eastern High School in 1929. After further education in law and office management, Dorothy became an employee of the federal government at the time Franklin Roosevelt became president. It was here that she met Allen Heald, a young lawyer from southeast Iowa, who found work in Washington drafting legislation for the U.S. Senate.
Dorothy and Allen were married in Washington in 1936 and were devoted to each other for the rest of their lives. The couple had three sons, Jon Allen of Cedar Rapids, William of Squamish, British Columbia and Theodore of Iowa City. She is also survived by three grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, all of her siblings and all of their spouses.
Dorothy assisted her husband in his work as a lawyer for the National Labor Relations Board, then for the Chicago Housing Authority and, after moving to Cedar Rapids in 1947, in Allen’s private law practice. In addition to assisting in case work and homemaking, Dorothy Heald was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, the League of Women Voters, and other community organizations. Mrs. Heald was an outspoken advocate of civil rights and racial equality. Throughout the mid-1960s she was a speaker with a multi-ethnic women’s forum which promoted these causes in Cedar Rapids. Dorothy traveled extensively with her husband in their later years, on tours through Europe, North Africa, the Holy land, Indonesia and China.
