Bill and I worked with Don at City Carton for a time. We are very sorry for your loss. I also lived in the state of Washington for awhile, so we commiserated about the great rains of Washington. My friend Mary K and I set him up with a date several years back, and our roommate not only stood him up, but us as well. Don showed up all dressed up and carring a beautiful bouquet of flowers. We all waited for ever for her to return, but never did that night. Don left the flowers; which we enjoyed, and offered to take us out for Chinese. We enjoyed his company and he took it all with a good sense of humor. Sincerely, Linda Lint

I will never forget all the times at work we spent sitting outside talking about life, love, loss... you were such a great friend to me. You were always there to cheer me up and always knew how to give the best advice. Everyone at Casey's loved you Don. You were the greatest. A father to all us lost and confused youngsters. My only regret is that I never got to say good bye.

Our sympathy goes out to the Friedman family. I have so many fond memories of Don from our days at Regis and later when Don came to our house to hang out and shoot hoops with my kids when they were younger. I can remember arguing with Don about his favorite college football team USC, and how he would only smile and laugh. Don never had a mean bone in him, he was a great friend who I will always remember. I will keep Don and his family in my prayers.

To the Friedman family, my sympathy goes out to you on the great loss of a son, brother, and uncle. A few childhood memories of Don that first come to mind are playing football at Eisenhower School with the neighborhood, his passion for gymnastics and muscles bulging out of his uniform, exciteable speech, friendliness to all ages, and especially his friendship to my brother Tom whom I'm sure is telling stories with Don in heaven. May God's peace be with you all. Dan Hackbarth

Nate was a true character and I'll miss him. We spent quite a bit of time together during our "formative" years in Cedar Rapids (at St. Pius and Regis) and can share a lot of stories that I'd rather my kids don't know about (yet). My best memories are of the flag football games at Collins and cruising the Ave in his impeccably maintained blue Nova. I'm calling "shot-gun" when I get through the Pearly Gates because I'm sure Nate will be there to pick me up. Good-Bye my friend! Through all of these past years we shared a lot of memories and adventures. From the early days of grade-school at St. Pius as safety-patrol guards, altar boys, and little-leagers. We celebrated birthdays at your parents house, shot hoops at Eisenhower school, and built forts near the creek by your house. We made it through the high-school years at Regis, through our crazy 20s and 30s, experienced life in the Pacific Northwest, and battled the ups and downs of life in general. We stratigized about the Hawkeye football and basketball teams, cheered on your USC pac-10 trogens, and joked about the endless rain in Seattle or how bad Old Man Winter was going to hit Iowa hard! We shared laughter as well as sorrow, good times as well as bad times. Kaye and I will definitely miss your gentle spirit. We find it hard to realize that you are gone but, we will forever keep your memory in our hearts! Good-Bye my friend! Until we meet again. To the Friedman family we express our deepest sympathy. Don was an amazing person, was truly loved, and will be greatly missed!

Friedman family, I am sorry for your loss of Don. Growing up on 47th St., I knew Don and Doug. Don was always so easy going and liked to have fun. The brothers had the knick names of toad and frog. The years just go by so fast anymore. Sincerely, Jim Lingo

So long Don. You were a good and faithful friend. I always appreciated the steadfast loyalty to the last Regis gymnastics team (especially the snacks @ Denny's after the meets). You continued your weight lifting even in later years. Thanks for your smiles and your efforts. I will miss you. My condolences to your family and especially Doug.

Condolences to the family and all who had the opportunity of knowing Don(Nate).Doug and Nate were high school buds but it was in my college years that I had a closer relationship.I was attending Southern Oregon State College in Ashland in 1977 and was walking across the street when a car waiting at the light honked. It was Kerry(Horse) Flannagan and Nate. They were coming directly from Iowa to Medford, Ore which was 10 miles up the road to stay with Horses brother.Fate had found us.Within the week they returned to Ashland crashing at my pad.We soon rented a place above a French restaurant in the downtown and lived there for two years. Many a guest (mainly high school buds, many responding on this site)would join us throughout our time in our humble apartment. Many would not only visit but would stay for months at a time.It was a special, memorable time in my life.Nate was always first to share.A gracious host, a low key friend who never lost composure and acted as a salve in times of need.A competitor who strived for improvement and maximized his skills and abilities.Nate didn't standout or want to.He simply wanted to be a friend.Tears cross my eyes as I write and remember. Here is to Don/Nate/Toad...a friend who can now be shared with all and at all times. Peace to all, zeke

Among my treasured memories are stories that my husband, Tom, shared with me about his growing up years. Included in those stories were great memories of times with Don. I didn't meet Don until I married Tom, by then Don and Tom were 20 years old, so my personal memories of Don begin a little bit later. Don was quiet . . . like Tom . . . and kind . . . like Tom . . . and always shared a smile . . . like Tom. I believe they are two very Christian men who are together today in the presence of God.
