Vernon Owens, 92, 3505 English Glen Avenue, Marion, died Thursday, March 19, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids with family at his side. Services: 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 24, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1285 Third Avenue S.E., Cedar Rapids, by Pastor Jim Langley.
Vernon was born August 30, 1916, at rural Palo to Charles Albert and Elotia (Tanner) Owens. He graduated from Shellsburg High School in 1934 and attended Iowa State University.
Vernon was a prominent Benton County farmer for many years. He was known to be innovative and progressive. He served on many ag-related boards and committees in Benton and Linn Counties. Some of his favorite times were spent on horseback.
Vernon married Hazel Carroll September 1, 1938. She died August 8, 1995. He married Alice (Rinderknecht) Berg September 5, 1997.
Preceding Vernon in death were his parents; his wife, Hazel Owens; his daughter, Sandra Andersen; and his sister, Alberta Owens.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Alice, of Marion; daughters, Verna Owens of Erie, CO; Barbara Moss (William) of Cedar Rapids; Linda Owens of Cedar Rapids; sons, David Owens (Miracle) of Waverly, N.Y.; and Gary Owens (Vicki) of rural Palo; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family wants to thank the staff of St. Luke’s Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospice for the care and compassion shown to our loved one.
