Gertrude E. Phelps, 100, of Cedar Rapids, died March 3, 2009 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy following a short illness. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM, Friday, March 6, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. Bob Voels of Trinity United Methodist Church will officiate. Friends may call from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday, March 5, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment will take place 3:00 PM, Friday, at Cass Township Cemetery, Strawberry Point, Iowa.

Survivors include her son Cal Phelps and wife Ruby; daughter Jayne Woodson; grandchildren Blake (Elaine) Phelps, Sherry (John) Gotterup, Lisa (Joe) Nelson, Scott (Zayda) Stevens; great grandchildren Steven (Devon) Phelps, Eric Phelps, Mashell and Jeremy Gotterup, Sara and Amanda Nelson, and Natalia and Esteban Sierra.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Shirley, and a brother Francis Wilson and his wife Fay.

Gertrude Evelyn Phelps was born October 25, 1908 in Chatham, North Carolina the beloved daughter of Delbert and Edna (Eckart) Wilson. She rode on horseback daily to attend school. She attended Iowa State Teachers College, and taught in a one room school. She was united in marriage to Shirley Phelps on September 18, 1928 in Edgewood, Iowa. She was a 50 plus year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She also was a 60 year member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. She enjoyed oil painting and growing flowers for all to enjoy. Above all her greatest enjoyment was the time she was able to spend with her family whom she loved dearly. She will be greatly missed, but remembered for her kindness and love.
