Betty Jo Crooks, 74, of 624 – 26th Street NW, died peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family, Monday, February 23, 2009. Services: 11 a.m. Friday at The First Church of The Open Bible by the Rev. Dan Sanford. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel and after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

Survivors include her children, Robin (Mark) Ortgies, Kenny (Anita) Crooks, Shari (David) Gish, all of Cedar Rapids; brother, Henry (Aline) Houck of Cedar Rapids; sisters, Libby Shelby, Kay Bailey, and Evelyn “Bill” Wheeler, all of Ashland, KY; grandchildren, Trenton, Matthew, Michael, Elizabeth (Vince), John (Nikki), Cash, Trevor (Megan), Blake (Shayla), Shantell, and Kendon; and six great grandchildren.

Betty Jo was preceded in death by her husband John and sisters, Lucille, Mary, and Emma.

Betty Jo was born on December 28, 1934 in Boyd County, Kentucky to John and Goldie Houck. She married John Crooks on January 28, 1955 in Anamosa. He died in 1983. Betty Jo loved children and was a day care provider from 1963 to 2000. She cared for over 50 children during that time. She was a faithful member of the First Church of The Open Bible. Betty Jo lived for her family and will be remembered for her wisdom and unconditional love.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Schroeder, Dr. Ghosh, the Iowa Blood and Cancer Center, and the special St. Luke’s Hospice staff, Michelle, Linda, Lolly, Peggy, and Lorrie for the loving care given to Betty Jo.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
