Memorial

Meryle F. Porter, 88, of Central City, formerly of Palo, died February 22, 2009 at Winslow House Care Center, Marion, following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, February 27, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. John Howerton of Palo United Methodist Church will officiate. Friends may call from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday, February 26, 2009 at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors are his wife Mary E. Porter; three daughters Mary Reed of Cedar Rapids, Bonny Gordon of Waubeek, and Becky (Mrs. Marvin Andrews) of rural Vinton; one son Meryle F. Porter, Jr. and wife Gloria of Carrolton, TX; 12 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren; and one sister Maysel McCloud of Manchester. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his parents, one brother Roscoe, and grandson Roy V. Gordon III.

Meryle was born December 23, 1920 in Rural Hopkinton to Frank and Mary Ann Porter. He attended schools in Buck Creek and Golden areas, and farmed with his folks in Delaware and Linn counties. Meryle married Mary Elizabeth White on October 4, 1941 in Kirksville, MO. They were married 67 years. They farmed in Delaware and Linn County before moving to Hiawatha in 1964. He worked at Iowa Glass and Kelly’s Security before retiring in 1983. He attended Palo United Methodist Church, and Senior Dining in Palo. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and mushroom hunting. Above all, Meryle enjoyed his family and all the grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren.

Memorial donations in Meryle’s honor may be made to the Palo United Methodist Church.
