Ralph E. Western, 89, of 6325 Rockwell Dr. NE. died Monday Jan. 26, 2009 at. Lukes Hospital after a short illness. Services at 10:30 AM on Saturday at the Kenwood Park United Methodist Church. Rev. Laura Smith will officiate. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Friday.
Survivors include three sons, Warren of Middletown, Connecticut, Bruce of Cedar Rapids and Lyle (Nancy) of Charles City, a daughter, Jean Bailey of Marion, two step-sons, James Cox of Cedar Rapids, Douglas Cox of Maryland and a sister, Jeanette Hauschild of Marshall, Minnesota. He is also survived by six grandchildren two step-grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Wendell.
Ralph was born on June 24, 1919 in Lake Benton, Minnesota, the son of Clarence and Florence Secor Western. He married Ruth A. Wright on June 9, 1946 in Aitkin, Minnesota. She died in 1979. He later married Eleanor Robinson Cox on Feb. 14, 1984 in Cedar Rapids. She died in 2007. Ralph was an engineer at Rockwell-Collins for 32 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of Kenwood Park United Methodist Church, VFW Post 788, American Legion Hanford Post No. 5 and proudly served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. Ralph enjoyed gardening, fixing anything and everything as well as spending time with his family. Memorial donations may be given to Kenwood Park United Methodist Church in Ralph’s name.
