Memorial
Orville Otto Oehler, 83, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, December 29. 2008 at Mercy Medical Center, Sioux City, after a long illness. Graveside Services: 12 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 10-12 p.m. Friday, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Orville is survived by son, Steven (Mary) Oehler, and children, Jocelyn (Michael) O’Connor,and their daughter Fiona (Harold) Firster; daughter Kathy (Roger) Kelly, and children, Kristin (Brian) Chmiel, Derek and Nathan (Jenica) Kelly; and son Dr. David (Erin) Oehler,and their daughters Miranda, Olivia, and Marina. Other survivors include two sisters, Ethel Miller and Lucille Harbur; and two brothers, William and Harvey, and their families.
Orville was born November 14, 1925 in Williamsburg, IA, middle child of Otto Oehler and Louise Bretschneider. He graduated from Amana High School and was inducted into the United States Army, March 24, 1944. He served in F Company, 254th Infantry, 63rd Division, in the Rhineland and Central Europe, where he was awarded a purple heart and a bronze star. He advanced to the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged on April 5, 1946. He married high school sweetheart Helen Louise Zimmerman on July 28, 1946 and graduated from Iowa State College in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Education. The couple farmed in the Cedar Rapids area while Orville managed the grain elevator in Walford., IA. In 1969 he earned a Master of Science degree from Iowa State University and worked for a time as the high school guidance counselor in Norway, IA. The couple retired from farming and moved to Sioux City, IA in 1995. They celebrated 61 years of marriage before she passed in October 2007.
