George W. Hidinger
I look back at my high school days at Jefferson and Mr. Hidinger stands out as a teacher, coach and friend. I foundly look back at having to take Geometery in summer school at Washington and Mr. Hidinger turning on the light bulb and making it so easy when it was so hard. Thank you! Art

To Mrs. Hidinger and Family, My deepest sympathies go out to all of you. As a 1982 graduate of Jefferson, I remember Mr. Hidinger as a very kind, sweet man who always had a kind word to say to you in the hallway, even if you weren't supposed to be there at that time of the day! He did alot for our sports programs and did a very good job as the Athletic Director when I was there. God Bless Him! Sincerely, Michele Africa Class of 1982

Please accept Carolyn's and my deepest sympathy with the passing of George. His/your lives serve as a role model for so many! It was my privilige to be a swim coach under his leadership and then follow as AD at Jeff for eleven years. Good memories! My favorite times as AD was the suprise visits from George just checking up on how things were going. He wouldnt stay but would just stop by to let me know that he was near and always available for help and advice! Thank you George and Marjorie! Please know that Carolyn and I will be out of the country during the services but our thoughts and prayers will be with you.

Mrs. Hidinger and Jim (my fellow 1973 classmate), I knew George very well at Jefferson. He was very motivating, fair, positive life-changing, and I have always had the highest regard for him. I remember his unending support for the Jefferson Class of 1973 (yes, son Jim was in it)and our money-making projects such as selling keychains, originated the class calendar, pancake breakfasts in the cafeteria, state championships in football and wrestling, West Side Delegation award winning performances, music and drama (I recall Jim in Fidler on the Roof) and it goes on. God Bless George and your family. Kevin Kubik, JHS 1973 Class President

As a student of Roosevelt High - till 1957, I remember Coach Hidinger always having a big smile, "Hi" for every student he passed in the hallways. Never having him as a teacher, but wanted the family to know he is one of the teachers, many, many students hold memories of good days at high school....because of not feeling like just a number! Does not surprise to learn he was a Christian....his light was always shining.

My heart goes out to the entire family as this is truly the passing of a great man. I knew George (and Marjorie) from my early years at Calvary, and remember their kind words and gentle smiles. In the hallways at Jefferson he was always complimentary and supportive. (Class of 77)

Dear Marg and Family, My deepest condolences on the passing of George. He was an encourager and a wonderful servant of the Lord. "Well done thou good and faithful servant," as the Lord has no doubt already greeted him. I first met him at Jefferson High School working in the Activities Office with him. I was thrilled to meet him again years later at Calvary Baptist. Always his warm and welcoming demeanor was evident. It was clear that he lived his faith fully. I am happy to have known him. May the Lord comfort you with His peace as you grieve the loss of George. Susan Norman, Cedar Rapids, Iowa

I have endearing memories of George going back some 55 years. He was our coach and teacher who taught us the qualities of fair play, discilpline, honor and the thrill of competing. He was an outstanding mentor and role model and by all accounts lived a life worth living.

To the Hidinger family, It was with great sorrow that I read of George's passing in the Gazette. He was the activities director when I came to Jefferson as the school's newspaper and yearbook adviser. As such, I had the pleasure to serve on the activities committee and I still recall him being extremely organized, efficient, and productive as our leader. Hopefully in time the sorrow that you are currently experiencing will be replaced by happier times and memories you shared with him. --- Ron Smrha

Hidinger Family: It is with great saddness that I learned of Mr. Hidinger's passing. He was a friend and mentor of mine, someone I respected greatly. He was a true leader in Iowa high school athletics and we all are indebted to his leadership. The Mississippi Valley Conference continues to use the Constitution Mr. Hidinger authored. Everyone associated with him gained immensely from that relationship. His personal qualities are standards we should all seek to attain. My sincere condolances. Duane Kramer

Jim and Family I just wanted to let you know that I share your grief. It's not easy to move through a time such as this, but we all seem to find that inner strength needed to keep heads held high and to know that a community exists to support you and your family.

I served as band director at Jefferson, 1965-1979. It was always a pleasure to work out details for concerts, trips, and athletic events with George. He was congenial, cooperative, and had a genuine appreciation for the Fine Arts. In addition to his athletic skills, he had participated in music activities, both in high school and in college. One of my fond memories at Jefferson is directing a faculty band for a pep meeting in the early 70's. George was our "anchor man" on tuba! My sincere sympathy to the family on your loss. He was, indeed, a role model for other teachers.

We never considered an Iowa State HS Athletic Directors convention an "official" convention until we had seen and talked to George. He was such a great role model for so many people. There was really no person we respected and liked more than George. His passing does, indeed, leave a big hole in many hearts. We send our deepest sympathy to all of his family. I can't beging to express my deepest dondolences to the Hidinger family. During my Jefferson years ('76-'79), Mr. Hidinger was always my favorite Associate Principal, and a genuine pleasure to be around. Always smiling and soft-spoken, assuming you weren't at a sporting event, he was truly a joy to be around. (At sporting events too. He just wasn't as soft-spoken.) I thank God for George's dedication to education, and for giving me the honor of having known him. And to the Hidinger family, Semper Fi. (Forever Faithful)
