Shirley M. Cutchlow
It is a rare in this life to meet someone who has us an everlasing impact. Mrs. Cutchlow was my preschool teacher in the early 80's. Even after 25 years I still am thankful for her kindness and her expectation for my success. As an adult I have ran into her and she remembers me by name, asks about my parents and shows interest in my children. She was the best teacher I have ever had and has influcenced my life in so many ways. Her love for the community and her internal drive to serve others has not only inspired me, but countless children and adults in our city. Cedar Rapids just won't be the same without her, but her legacy of community pride will live on.

Sheila and Therie, your mom was one of my dearest friends during the years I lived in CR. She was a remarkable woman and I am proud to have known her. It was a joy to read all the things she achieved after my time with her. God's blessings on you as you grieve her loss and celebrate her life and her life eternal with our Lord Jesus Christ.

Shirley Cutchlow was one of the most incredible and wonderful ladies I have ever met. She was the energizer bunny, who many us drew energy from. She touched the lives of more people than she could ever realize...she certainly touched mine. I was always grateful she came to me when the African American Historical Museum and Cultural Center was just a dream and got me involved in being a lifetime member and supporting the dream. She never hesitate to stop over and visit me at Camp Courageous or introduce me to many of her friends. Shirley was truly loved by many...me being one of many. How we will miss her wonderful personality and her genuine desire to help others...what a sweetheart!

I also share fond memories of Mrs. Cutchlow as my pre-school teacher at the former St. Wenceslaus Church Daycare back in the 70's. She was an incredible activist in our community and as a result, she leaves a lasting legacy for the next generations to come. I send my deepest sympathies to Sheila, Therie, Mallory and the rest of the family for your loss and I pray you will find peace in your hearts knowing Shirley is right now with her Father in Heaven. Jesus himself tells us in John 14:1-3 "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. (NIV) May the God of all peace bring you comfort in your time of need.

I am also among those students who were educated in love by Mrs. Cutchlow as one of my pre-school teachers at the former St. Wenceslaus Church Daycare back in the late 60's. She shared her Christian experience with me and many others as a member of Mt Zion Missionary Baptist Church. She raised to wonderful women whom I was fortunate to have known. I send my deepest sympathies to Sheila, Therie, and all of the remaining family members who are feeling the loss of a mother, grandmother and sister. It may come as no comfort, but know that her spirit lives in all of the lives that were touched by her love. Our prayers are with you. Karl Davis and Family Fort Belvoir, Virginia

Dear Sheila, Therie & Mallory, I love you guys and feel so blessed to have known someone as wonderful as Mrs. Cutchlow. She truly exemplifies the expression, " let deeds not words be your adorning." One of my fondest memories is the time I spent with Mrs. Cutchlow after Mallory was born. She was overjoyed and beamed everytime she looked at her or when anyone mentioned Mallory's name. Understanably, she had the same reaction when I mentioned Mallory's name during our last conversation. Her legacy of love for her family, friends and community will endure forever. We are praying for you. Love, TeAndra & Family

Therie, please accept our sincere sympathy for your loss. Your mother was remarkable while with us, and we're sure she will continue to progress in the worlds beyond. My husband and I met your father first -he sold us our encylopaedia and charmed us. Then I met you at Ra Power fitness center, and ran into you several times while at Coe College. I was impressed by the strength of your character. When I later met your mother at the African American Museum, I understood why. The community will indeed miss Mrs. Cutchlow. She was unassuming, dedicated loving and very loved. A role model for us all. Your are in our thought and prayers, Gale & Doug Koch

I'd not seen Ms. Cutchlow in years, but have held her close to my heart, where she left an indelible mark.I've thought of her often. When we lived in Cedar Rapids, she would sometimes take our young son Jarian (J.R.)to Sunday school & church when John and I did not attend. She would report to us, for example, "Jarian led the review of the Sunday school lesson today." One Sunday J.R. came home and had joined the church (with Mrs. Cutchlow's influence, of course!) and a date had been set for his baptism! She really was a surrogate grandmother to him,and I loved her for that. I also loved her for bringing into our lives two beautiful young ladies, Therie and Sheila, who were J.R.'s first babysitters and who became our "nieces." I loved the person that Mrs. Cutchlow was and the role that she played in our lives. And I know that she's right now "taking charge"of the Pearly Gates! :) Sheila and Therie, it is with the news of Mrs. Cutchlow's passing that I am reminded how much you mean to us, and I hope that we all can somehow spend time together in the future. After all, John still desperately needs someone to laugh at his corny jokes, you know, like the two if you used to do. With Love and Fond Memories,

Therie, I echo all that has been written in the memorials to your mother. Her enthusiasm and drive inspired me and made it very difficult to say no to any of her requests, so I rarely did. Her passing is a loss for all who knew her. Take care, Steve Menzner

Sister Cutchlow was my Jr. Usher Board leader at Mt Zion during my childhood. I remember her with a smile. She lived and loved to serve and I am grateful for such an example of Christian hospitality. She was beautiful in all her ways and will be greatly missed!
