Memorial

Erva T. Gongwer, 87, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Monday November 24, 2008 in the Carlisle Care Center, Carlisle, following a long illness. Services: 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories by the Rev. Beth Straw. Friends may call on Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel on Friday from 4-8 p.m. and after 10:00 a.m. at the chapel on Saturday. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include her children, Gerry J. Haas (Kenneth) of Denver, James A. Gongwer (Carol) of Marion, Ray W. Gongwer (Jennifer) of Cedar Rapids, Roy H. Gongwer (Lori) of Carlisle, 13 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Also survived by 2 brothers, Lyall Taylor of Philomath, Oregon, Don Taylor of Cedar Rapids, and a sister, Thelma Wood of Marion.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome J. Gongwer in 1997, 3 brothers, Cliff, Mike and Gene, 2 step sisters, Margaret and Bonnie; and a step brother, Bill.

Erva was born June 6, 1921 in Belle Plain, the daughter of William and Rose Mitchell Taylor. She married Jerome J. Gongwer on August 3, 1941 in Cedar Rapids. Erva worked for Jack & Jill Preschool for 18 years and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she was active in many groups from the church. She enjoyed sewing, craft making, and chaperoning many Drum Corps trips. Her love for her family was endless and treasured the times spent with them. She was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

A memorial fund has been established for Carlisle Care Center and Hospice of Central Iowa.
