Memorial

Jack Conrad Novak of Alexandria, Virginia, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, October 23, 2008 of Parkinson’s disease. Memorial services with military honors will be held at 1 PM Saturday, November 15, 2008, in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Rev. William Harnish will officiate. Inurnment in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may register at the chapel from noon to service time. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

He leaves behind, his daughter, Lani Novak Howe and husband William, two grandchildren, Hannah and James, his companion of many years, Vivian Edelfelt, a brother Don G. Novak and wife Jane, and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Allayne, and sister Mary Jean Potter and husband Wally.

Jack was a June 1943 graduate of West Point and served in the United States Air Force for nearly 30 years. He was a Flight Commander in the 398th Bomber Group, flying B-17 Heavy Bombers in the European Theater during WW II. After the war, he served in Europe before returning to a post at the Pentagon. He achieved the rank of Colonel, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star, and a Presidential Unit Citation.

Jack was the son of Leo V. Novak who coached at Coe College and was a God son of Newt Rockne.

After his retirement, he became president of the company he founded, Photo Research International, a stock photo library. He was a pioneer in the stock photo industry.

Military honors will be provided by VFW Post No 788.
