To the Gradwell Family, I'm sorry for your loss. Mr. Gradwell was my sixth grade teacher at Elvira Elementary, and was also my school bus driver.

Many great memories of Mr. Gradwell, the way he wore his winter stocking cap, the way he taught his class - one of my favorite teachers! Elvira Elementary Strict but caring! The last time I saw Mr. Gradwell was on RAGBRAI and he remembered me. With Sympathy, Paul Mulholland

Our Dear Neighbors and Friends, We are so very sorry about the monumental loss of Max. Our hearts are broken and ache for all of you. Our neighborhood will not be the same without Max. Seeing him sitting there, waving at everyone and giving his 'two cents' about things whenever anyone would stop to visit. He was so good to our children and they were all so saddened when we shared the news and were worried about "Max's candy." Mary, we are here for you ANYTIME you need ANYTHING. Do not hesitate to call us. Just know that heaven has gained a wonderful angel. Love and prayers, Jim, Liz, Maria, Annie, John and Luke xoxoxoxoxoxo

My condolences to the Gradwell family. Max was a strict, but good fifth grade teacher at Linn-Mar and remembered his students well after teaching them. As an adult, I ran into him at a wrestling meet while he was coaching and he reconized me after teaching me 20 years prior. Not too many teachers are as dedicated as that anymore. He certainly was a "good one"

Dear Marcia and Gradwell family, Todd and I send our sympathy and prayers. We are thinking of you and send lots of special "hugs" to help you at this time. Your dad and memories of his teaching days at Northeast have been talked about here at school by fellow staff members and those that had him as a teacher.

Mr Gradwell was my softball coach at Lisbon-many years ago. As has been said, he was strict but fair. I refused to wear my catcher's mask at practice. The day that I got a ball in the eye, he had NO sympathy for me. I wore my mask after that! He also gave me a sports letter as a freshman. It made my dad (and hero) very proud. At his funeral, my son read a card I had given him and it talked about that. Margaret and Mike, you were always good friends and I felt like part of your family at times. My sympathy and prayers to all of you. Thank you for sharing your dad and husband with the world.

To the Gradwell family, Im was sorry to hear of the sudden loss of Amanda's grandpa Max. He and Mary were always so friendly to me whenever I was over at their home. I wish I could come to his memorial but i am unable to. For all the generosity, thank you Max.

Dear Aunt Mary, Michael, Mary, Margaret, Marcia, Martha and Milton, Our thoughts and prayers are with you this weekend. We wish we could be at Uncle Max's memorial. Uncle Max was such a strong ray of sunshine and source of great stories at family gatherings. We are so glad that we were able to see Uncle Max, Aunt Mary and girls at the family reunion in southern Iowa. We really enjoyed listening to Uncle Max's stories about growing up with Grandpa Charley. Uncle Max was one of those truly great storytellers and a really fun and special person to spend time with. We are sure keeping him (and you all) close in heart and mind. We are sending you all our sympathies. We hope to see you the next time we are in Iowa.
