Herman Allen McCalla, 90, of 5110 – 16th Avenue SW, died at the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy on Monday, September, 15, 2008, after a long illness. Services: 1 P.M.; Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by the Rev. Brenda Ehret of the Unity Center. Interment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 7 P.M. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife, Marvel; son, William McCalla; daughter, Sharon Svoboda, all of Cedar Rapids; and grandchildren, Lori Svoboda, Lenae Grade, and Dave McCalla.

Herman was born on December 2, 1917 in Bedford, Iowa, to Willis and Mae McCalla. He married Marvel Chudlic in Cedar Rapids on April 5, 1957. He worked at the Water Pollution Control Plant for the City of Cedar Rapids from 1956 to 1979. Herman was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. To know him was to love him. He was not one to give up easily and now receives his final reward and rest. Herman was a gentle, compassionate man who will be missed greatly because he loved deeply.
