Roger was born on Sept. 15, 1926 in Dubuque, the son of Robert and Grace Andresen Zemanek. Roger was an Eagle Scout and served in the Pacific as a Navy Medical Corpsman during WWII. He was a graduate of the University of Dubuque. During his sophomore year at the University of Iowa Dental College, he was severely paralyzed during the polio epidemic of 1949. He was a member of American Legion Hanford Post No. 5, the PVA and the First Lutheran Church all in Cedar Rapids.
Roger's boundless energy and optimistic outlook on life proved to be a living inspiration to those who knew and loved him. His love of people was matched only by his passion for life. He considered his confinement to a wheel chair as a means to an end, not as an end.
