John William Cotter, 88, of 4801 Montclair Dr. NW, died Wednesday August 20, 2008 in Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy following a brief illness from pancreatic cancer. Services: 3:00 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories by the Rev. William B. Harnish. Visitation will be on Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4-7pm and at the chapel on Saturday after 2:00 p.m. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Jean, two daughters, Pat McCune and husband Dan of Rochester, New York, Vickie Nurre of Marion, a step son Gregg Lukehart and wife Paula of Springville, a sister, Virginia Blanchard and husband Warren of Cedar Rapids, four grandchildren, Benton McCune and wife Jennifer Glanville of Iowa City, Julie McCune of Washington DC, Robin Schuster and husband Jeremy of North Liberty, Matthew Nurre of Iowa City, 3 step grandchildren Nicki Still and husband Tim of Marion, Brittney Lukehart of Marion and Travis Lukehart of Springville. Also surviving are 3 great grandchildren. John was born August 9, 1920 in Des Moines, the son of John and Gladys Cotter. He married Dorothy Bunch in 1951. She died in 1978. He then married Jean Lukehart in 1981. John was employed for 24 years with the Linn County Health Dept. retiring in 1981. He was a member of the V.F.W. and F.R.A., and enjoyed NASCAR Racing. John, a veteran of WWII, served in the Navy for 20 years and the Fleet Reserve for 10 years. A memorial fund has been established by the family.
