Herman M. Frueh Jr., 86, of 3665 37th Ave SW #A, died Tuesday afternoon, August 5, 2008, in his home under Hospice care. Services with military honors at 10 AM Saturday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Inurnment in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 7 PM on Friday and at the chapel after 9:30 AM on Saturday.

Survivors include his wife Maxine, and children, Nancy Mark Arthur of Sumner, Iowa, David Harris of Center Point, Iowa, Daniel Harris of Los Angeles, California, and Tammy Mark Hannon of El Granada, California, grandchildren, Brenda Jesse Miller of Dubuque, Kerry Mark Schmitz of Swisher, Tina Arthur of College Station, Texas, Timothy Amanda Arthur of Sumner, Chris Harris of Cedar Rapids, Matthew and Luke Hannon of El Granada, California, great-grandchildren, Taylor, Trenton, and Tye Miller of Dubuque, Lauren and Olivia Schmitz of Swisher, Chase and Jonathan Redfern, and Grace Arthur all of Sumner. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, James Frueh in infancy, and John Frueh, and one step daughter, Sheryl Harris.

Herman was born February 7, 1922 in Cedar Rapids to Herman M. Sr. and Grace E. Barnicle Frueh. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1939. He played professional baseball for Sheboygan, Wisconsin in 1940. He worked for La Plant-Choate until joining the Army Air Corps in 1942. He served as a pilot from 1942 to 1945, flying in the European theater during WW II. He returned to La Plant-Choate until 1946, when he joined the Cedar Rapids Fire Department. He retired as Assistant Chief in 1978. He headed the Cedar Rapids Building Department from 1979 to 1984.

Herman married Betty Ann Denin on July 11, 1942. They had one daughter, Nancy. Betty died on March 31, 1972. He married Maxine F. Baird on December 14, 1973. He and Maxine shared four children.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or to the charity of your choice.

Military honors by VFW Post No 788. Fire Department Honor Guard by Cedar Rapids Fire Department.
