Wallace Leroy DeWoody
Dearest DeWoody Family-Vince and I are so deeply saddened for your loss. Wally was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed by all. We always enjoyed hearing your stories, Jan about the " early years". I will always remember how you and Wally laughed so hard telling us about how the two of you ran around and threw firecrackers at each other. It was so easy to tell all the pride and love Wally had for his family. I know the all the DeWoody family will keep his spirit alive and find comfort with so many beautiful memories. Much love-Vince & Polly Calise

Dear Mollie and Family - Although I never had much of a conversation with your dad I was a young kid when we used to come over to the house to rent canoe's... he was always friendly to me and in many ways over the following 20+ years a guy I looked up to even just in passing when I'd drive by your house and see him working on something - or occassionally see him at the hardware store - because he always seemed like a hard worker, he had his own business for many years, he was a hands on guy, and he had a really great family! I'm sure he'll be very missed by many! I'm sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you Mollie and your family - Eric & Janell

Dearest Jan and family..I have so many great memories of time spent with you. Jan, foremost as an intregal connection to learn of my personal savior Jesus. To be in a bible study with you was priceless. Then the many times as a family sharing time with the horses with Jarry and my boys, Brian and Mark. Your hospitality is well remembered. I can sure remember Wally running Ruby accross Thomas Park field! Lots of fun memories of a wonderful caring family. My sincere sympathy to you all. As my husband Dean is struggling with terminal cancer most likely I will not make it to see you in person. Blessings to you all. Carrol

To Janet & Family, How well I remember Wally from our High School days at Marion. Even though I was an under classman at the time, class of 56 it still seems like only yesterday during 1955 when the WAMAC Football team with Wally as our Quarterback ran on to the field located down by the American Legion Pool the old stadium. Number 26 Gold Jersey always led us. You were a leader Wally! The other Guest Book comments from friends and well wishers all express that Wally's deeds indicate that he maintained leadership qualities throughout his entire lifes journey. I want express my sincere condolences to Janet, her children and the entire DeWoody family during this time remembering Wally's wonderful life story and his important accomplishments, not only for the benefit of his family but for others as well... Remember, we will all meet again one day.......... My best regards, George H. Brewer

Jan & Family, I'm thinking of you all; you are in my thoughts and prayers. Wally will be missed by so many people. Wally was a pleasure to be around. I will always remember him as being a fun and caring man. I had the pleasure to work with Wally, Mollie, Todd, and Brad at the Park in Central City. That was my favorite job - just loved working there w/ Wally and his family. Everyone was always so nice and fun! I will always remember the canoe trips down the Wapsi that always took much longer than they should, but Wally was always there waiting for us w/ a huge smile on his face anxious to hear about all the fun we had! I know Wally really cared and loved his family as he talked about everyone often. He touched the hearts of many people. He will be missed. God Bless Wally and each and every one of you. Keith

Dear Janet, My prayers are with you. My husband died in 2004 so I know how difficult it is. I was one of the Emerson Elem. kids and lived on the edge of town. Wally was among the several kids including Phyllis Carlson who would gather in a pasture there and play work up! May God send His Spirit to comfort you with the knowledge of His love and the fact of resurrection--His and ours! Betsey

Jan, I remember all the years Wally and you devoted to us scouts, putting up with all the pranks, taking the trips down the Wapsie, to Camp and to Canada. He was there - always with a smile - giving of himself to those of us who needed a hand. He will be missed - but I'm sure God must have needed his help or he wouldn't have taken Wally so soon. Ed

Julie, Words can't express the sorrow I felt when I heard about your Dad. I was always made to feel so welcome at your home and it warmed my heart to see how close your family was! It was always a treat when the girl scouts ended up at the DeWoody's for one reason or another. You could feel the love in your home the minute you walked through the door. And Jan, what a loss to loose your life partner, my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your entire family. You will always have a special place in my heart. Love, Micki

I first met Wally at Emerson School and we would walk home together. Then we went on to MHS where he really made his mark. I always enjoyed seeing Wally and Janet at all of the Marion High School class reunions since then. I was just looking at the 1954 Quill and at Wally's picture the comment was "I'm no angel", but I'll be he is!! Wally was a sweet person and will be greatly missed!

What a great picture of Uncle Wally! I will always remember the time when he cut the chicken's head off after it was attacking me. Then it continued to run around with it's head cut off. After that moment, I thought Uncle Wally was a hero and the greatest thing ever. That is just one of many stories I will always remember about Uncle Wally and the whole DeWoody family. Wally was a great neighbor. We have all missed the sound of his tractor running, even into the late evening. My 3 year old son and I got to know Wally on our daily walks. Wally would stop from time to time to chat with us about his yard and his family. He would even give Caleb rides on his golf cart around the neighborhood. Every time we pass his house Caleb chatters about Wally and asks where he is. Wally, you sure are missed. Thank you for taking the time to get to know us. Our prayers are with all of you during this difficult time. Esther and Caleb Mossman

Dear Janet and Family, I am so sorry to hear about Wally. Growing up and hanging out at your house and at the canoe rental with Gwen will always be fond memories for me. Wally's favorite term of endearment for me was, "What are you up to turkey?" He will be in my heart always. My thoughts are with you. Dear Jan and family, It is with a heavy heart and tear filled eyes that I compose this memorial. I am deeply saddened for your loss. Wally was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed by all. My memories of Wally and the time I have spent with your family are endless. I was privileged to work at Twin River Supply for 13 years. I recall hanging out at the boat rental when I was only 8 years old. My older siblings had all worked or were currently working and I was eager for my chance. Wally, being the comedian he always was, finally came over to me and said “Listen turkey, either start picking up lifejackets or you are going for a swim.” Little did I know that I would be working side by side with the DeWoody family for 13 years creating a family-like bond that is everlasting. During that time we enjoyed numerous canoe trips, 4th of July bottle rocket fights, Christmas parties, sledding at Pinicon Ridge, trips to Adventureland and Chicago, Mollie’s softball games, and numerous sleepovers. Wally was a fantastic employer! He was a businessman, teacher and a father figure to not just his own children but whoever was blessed to have known him. He will be missed by all, but his love for life will live in all of us forever.

Jan, Brad, and entire DeWoody Family, We just returned from vacation and heard of Wally's passing - what a shock. We remember the days in Cub Scouts and then in Troop 59 - wonderful memories. We will remember Wally's smile and always a kind word - even when the Scouts were being not so 'Scoutly'. I ran into Wally at the grocery store one day with our Brad's son, Jaden, and had a nice visit with him. I pass your house almost every day going to and from work and would see Wally out in the yard working or may see him walking down to the bus barns. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. The world has lost a very special man.

DeWoody Family, I was very saddened to learn of Wally's passing. It's been many years since I had seen him but he is still in my memory. My brother Kirk and I worked for him one summer in about 1978 painting the barn, shuttling canoes and a variety of other things. Wally was always upbeat and had a great zest for life. My sister Lisa worked a subsequent summer at the canoe rental. All three of us thought he was terrific. Our condolences and best wishes to the entire family. Bruce McMurray
