James E. Nye, 91, of Phoenix, AZ., formerly of Cedar Rapids died Friday Jan. 18, 2008 at the Christian Care Nursing Center in Phoenix after an extended illness. Services at 11 AM on Friday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories where friends may call beginning at 10 AM on Friday. Burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Violet, a stepdaughter, Carol Hawthorne of Overland Park, Kansas and a brother, Kenneth of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Michael, Brian, Catherine and Mark Hawthorne, and many nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Daniel, five brothers and four sisters.
Jim was born on Feb. 21, 1916 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Frank and Emma Kennedy Nye. He married Violet B. Viegen on Sept. 8, 1957 in Texas County, Missouri. Jim worked at Penick & Ford, later Penford for 40 years, retiring in 1977. He was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids, the Desert Palms Presbyterian Church in Sun City West, AZ, and the founding president of the Penick & Ford Retirees Club. He was an avid horseman, enjoyed gardening and time spent with his beloved family. Memorial donations may be given to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 East Flower St. Phoenix, AZ. 85014.
