Memorial

LaVae Darlene Light, 71, of 2518 A Ave NE, died Friday, January 11, 2008, in Mercy Medical Center following a short illness. Services at 1 PM Tuesday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. David Hohmann of First Congregation United Church of Christ officiating. At her wishes she is being cremated. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 7 PM on Monday and at the chapel after 12:30 PM on Tuesday.

Survivors include her husband Edgar, two daughters Deborah Wells and Dawn O’Brien both of Cedar Rapids, her brother Robert Gerri Slaybaugh of Cedar Rapids, 6 grandchildren, Chad and Megan Wells, Ashley Nick Trask Poorman, Amber Chris Brown, Cara and Brittany Poorman, five great-grandchildren, Halie, Khristian, Kaylynn, Tenisha, and Micheal, two step daughters Sheila and Glenda Light, and Step son Kevin, her former husband David Aucutt, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons LeRoy W. Knowles, and Franklin Hilligas, and son in law Dennis O’Brien.

LaVae was born December 28, 1936 in Geneva, Nebraska to Clarence and Velma Frantz Slaybaugh. She moved from Nebraska to Iowa in 1939 attending school in Shellsburg. She then moved to Cedar Rapids in 1953 and graduated from Franklin high School in 1955. She had most recently worked for HACAP. She was active in the American Legion Post 298 Auxiliary, Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, Shrine Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, Elks Lodge Ladies Auxiliary, and was a member of First Congregation United Church of Christ where she was active in the women’s fellowship.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Marion American Legion Post 298 Auxiliary 2nd District Merit Award Fund.
