Memorial
John Clarence Eichhorn, 87, passed away October 28, 2007 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was born October 7, 1920 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. His parents were John Clarence and Gladys Wagner Eichhorn. He grew up in Oskaloosa and then attended the University of Iowa, receiving his Bachelor of Arts in political science and a JD with Distinction from the College of Law in 1948.
Between his college degrees, he was in World War II serving as an Army officer in the United States and Europe and Africa. He was in England for eight months and saw the D Day invasion from England.
On August 19, 1948 he married Katharine Brittain Safely in Cedar Rapids. He started his law practice with the firm of Chrisman and Bleakley.
The Korean War interrupted the law practice and he was called as a JAG officer and assigned to Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana. His last rank was First Lieutenant.
He returned to Cedar Rapids and practiced transportation and corporate law, later moved to Newton and then to Des Moines, and finally retired to Cedar Rapids. For 17 years he served as the District Counsel for the Small Business Association, with a specialty in bankruptcy law.
John is survived by three children, Julianne Marty Smith, John Rita Eichhorn and Ellen Eichhorn. He has five grandchildren Thomas Sarah Anderson, Brittain Steven Ezzes, Abigail Eichhorn, Emily
James Henkel, and Katharine Eichhorn. He has one great grandson, John Rowan Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Patricia Lundy.
He belonged to Delta Chi and Phi Delta Phi fraternities. He actively supported the Republican Party and Planned Parenthood. He loved golf and bridge and read two newspapers a day, cover to cover.
John could be counted on
as a very loyal friend to all the people and causes in which he believed.
From the time his grandmother took him to the opening game at the brand new Kinnick Stadium, John loved the Iowa Hawkeyes. He supported the Iowa Alumni Club and he enthusiastically and energetically cheered the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Dearest to his heart was his family. He was a wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His delight and joy in other people will be dearly missed.
The family would like to thank the very dedicated staff at Cottage Grove Place for all their excellent care and support.
There will be a private inurnment at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories Mausoleum, officiated by Rev. William Pugliese, Christ Episcopal Church.
